I did that very thing in 1947; Central Grade School, Pierce City, Mo. Only my knee hit a sharp rock, tore my overalls, made a deep cut about 3/4 of an inch long, and deep. I frankly don't remember even telling the teacher. I know Mom was mad, because my overalls were fairly new...what's a little blood?
(1978ish) Around ten yrs old I got cut bad enough the teacher had someone drive me to my family Dr.
They put a few stitches in and I went home. No call to parents, no panicking, just showed up at home with stitches.
A few days later I was walking home from school and figured I'd get them taken out (skin growing over - fast healing i guess)
The nurse took them out and that was that.
Can't imagine many ten year olds dealing with things that way these days. Mostly because of hovering parents IMO.
At that age Dr appointments and dentist etc were me on my own. No need for mom wasting time sitting there.

Man: We went to a great new restaurant last night. Food was fantastic!

Friend: What's it called?

Man: "It's right on the square downtown.

Friend: Yes, but what's it called?

Man: Flower. Red. Long stems. Thorns.

Friend: Rose's?

Man: Yes! Thanks! (Calls out to kitchen) "Rose, what what the name of that place we ate in last night?"

You know, this just illustrates how narrow and/or ignorant some people are. I certainly have no desire to kill a deer, but I can tell you that back in the 30's and early 40's my Dad killed quite a few (illegally I might add) just so we could have meat on the table.

In fact, when I was growing up in the 50's and 60's, much of the wild game...deer, turkeys, beaver...were harvested by the depression meat hunters until there were no turkeys or beaver and very, very few deer left. Now there are more than there ever have been.

Growing up a country boy, I learned to hunt when I was in my teens. Some people don't recognize that country culture and hunting go together, at least they do/did here.
