Grinding noise after starting

Check and make sure the Petals are centered and the tractor HNL is in N. Then start it up. If you are still hearing the noise there is a problem with the pump or drive shaft. Could have been caused by the auger. Too much strain on the auger could damage the drive shaft.

You said he had an issue with the PTO. Make sure the PTO lever is in the disengaged position and the switch on the dash isn't stuck on or shorted.
