Hi,

Seems like there's a lot of knowledge here so I thought I'd pick your brains on this one. I've got a meat grinder that I just used for grinding up some cranberries, it seemed to work well. In the instructions it recommends coating the cutter parts with vegetable oil for storage which I always do. They're made of carbon steel and will rust if not coated with something. I don't use the grinder much and the oil gets very sticky and I think it's probably rancid. They're very hard to clean before I use it each time. I think the shelf life of the vegetable oil we buy (Great Value vegetable oil) is probably only about 6-9 months after opening.

Does anyone have a better suggestion on what I can coat the cutter parts of the grinder with for storage other than plain old vegetable oil?

Kevin, Jena, Kyle John :)

Vegetable oil sounds good, mineral oil is a petroleum product. When you go to clean it try rubbing alcohol to cut the old oil, then wash that out. Carbon steel always rusts easily and can pit. Steel wool can clean up any rust. Coat it heavily with vegetable oil. It should not matter if the oil becomes rancid. Store it away from mice, bugs, and where you will be tripping over it!

I spray mine with silicone and wash before use.

You could keep using vegetable oil if you put the bag of parts in the fridge after coating them. It will stay fresher that way.

Ok, I liked this idea so I went to the manufacturer's website and found this;

FGL-1 Spray - Lubriplate

Class H-1 lubricant in handy, easy to use 11 OZ. / 312 g. spray can. Quick and clean applications. Fortified with anti-wear, anti-rust, and anti-corrosion additives.NLGI# 1

Now if I can find some, maybe Grainger.

I use my Oster Processor with Grinder often (ham & chicken salad) so I don't have to worry about the blade and screen BUT, when I clean them I always put them on the burner of my electric stove on low for a few minutes to completely dry them.
If I were to store them I would oil them, place in a ziplock bag (or vaccuum seal if you have it) and put in the fridge. No need to get crazy about it.

Watch the heat on the burner with the carbon steel - lose temper if too hot.
