Greenhouse input

Anyone know anything about greenhouses? I am trying to help my aunt find one for my uncle as a surprise. She thought she wanted one with glass panels, as opposed to plastic/poly panels. Any pros or cons on plastic/poly vs. glass? I did some searching online and could not find any with glass panels.

She is thinking something about 15 x 15 for size. Thanks for any input.

I know a couple people that bought one of these & they like them.


Harbor Freight Tools

One guy bought the 10x12 & the other one got the 8x10.

We used to have one of the Harbor Freight ones linked above. It was a 10x12. The wind kept blowing the panels out of it. We ordered more of the clips that came with it to hold the panels in from a greenhouse supply store. We more than doubled the clips. They still blew out. I then used silicone and the double clips. Still blew out. I then drilled a hole in each panel in the middle where it crossed a support beam, re-siliconed, and used the double # of clips. The panels finally stayed. Then the back supports started bending on me. I reinforaced them with a piece of 1/2" rebar. No more bending. Thought we were good. Then this spring we had quite a bit of rain and then some heavy wind. After it left our yard and hit the neighbor's house there wasn't much left of it. I think I got $14 for it when I took the aluminum to the recycler. Haven't decided what we are going to do about another greenhouse. If I were to do another HF one (highly doubtful) I would do some type of deep anchor for it beside just putting the frame down in the ground with dirt round it.

i have a juliana greenhouse that i bought quite a few years ago. its about 8x10. the glazing is polycarbonate and it is a kit. it has held up very well here where it gets very windy. i had to replace 2 panels a couple of years ago when we had a day of continuous high winds and i mistakenly left the door open. i recommend it.

We have one made by one of the pre-manufactured shed makers. You can get them made with a wood or galvanized steel frame. It cost about $2,600.00.
It is about 10x15. Check with your local shed stores they all make one they just don't have them on the lot. Very sturdy and well made!!

I had to laugh at that link to Harbor Freight. Here's their 4X6 greenhouse. I think that greenhouse belongs to the munchkins from the Wizard of OZ or there is a typo in the specs.

I don't know if you are against the hoop house type of greenhouse, but I know a few people who really like them. The nice thing about them is you can get them tall enough to fit your tractor in there to work the soil, or to store when not using for plants.

I built a green house that is 8x10 and connects onto the back of my barn's leanto. I framed it using 2x4, with 4x4 for the corners and used the plastic panels for the roof and for the side that has the door. i put a preprimed plywood panel (smartboard) on the sides where the roof comes down (^ is plastic panel l is plywood (with the roof pitch this is only 4' high, this also gives it strenght to hold up to our snows.

I also do not have to worry about it not heating up it gets plenty hot in there. The base is 4x4's whith gravel and 4'' black perf pipe running though for dranage. I use it in the winter to store my tractor, in the summer to hold my plants until they hit the garden then the snow blower goes in there. The snakes seem to love it too.
