Tractor
Kubota BX1850
This my first post to the forum, but I have been lurking for many months. I was at my brother's house for Christmas and overheard my nephew talking about how his lawn tractor died and he didn't have the funds to get it fixed or buy a different one (new house and baby). Well... I have been looking for an excuse to buy a new tractor, so I told him he could have my old, but faithful, John Deere 112 (square fender). Although it's 36 years old, I was only the second owner and now my nephew will be the third. The JD was in great shape (for its age) and has served me well. The day after Christmas, I signed the papers for a new Kubota 1850 with front blade. I wanted a FEL, but really had no need for one. The tractor is primarily used to plow our 400' driveway in the winter. Well, the tractor was delivered last week (reportedly delayed due to a shortage of blades) and it is fantastic. One reason I chose the Kubota oveer the other brands was all of the positive comments it received on this forum. Many thanks to all of the active forum members. After one week, I have logged about four hours of seat time. Of course, I am hoping for more snow. I am amazed how well it handle 6 plus inches of snow with just wheel weights and no chains. My little JD could not have done that.

Yes this was a big step forward for me. Really, there is no comparison between the old JD and the new Kubota. In all honesty, the Kubota was probably more tractor then I need, but it is sure fun. My neighbor still uses the older JD 112s and swears by them for small jobs around the house - yard work. I am fortunate I was able to upgrade.

Nice looking machine, and that was a very nice thing you did for your nephew. Good deeds deserve a nice new toy, I mean tool.

Interesting you bring up the seat issue. Before I purchased the Kubota I asked the dealer about the old vs new seat design and he stated that it came with the new seat. I have sent him a e-mail asking about the new seat - so I will wait and see.

The tractor looked like it was invoiced to the dealer in October 2007, so I assumed that it would have the new seat. We all know what happens when you assume something.......

Those new bota's are great. But in all fairness, an equivalent JD would have been an awsome step up too.

It was a good thing you did for your nephew. I know my first year in the house all I had was a lawnboy 19" push mower that was found under a stall full of horse manure to mow 3+ acres.

54 or 60 Blade?

I went with the 54 manual angle blade for two reasons:

1)Cost - the difference between the two blade is roughly $800 (Anyway I need the exercise that I get getting on and off the tractor to change the blade angle)

2)Availability if I wanted the 60 blade, the dealer could not guaranty delivery until mid or late February (I verified this with other dealers in MN)

My previous blade was only 42 , so this is a big improvement.

My wife is great and she agreed that I needed a new tractor - in fact she actually went to the dealer with me.

1*When I was dealing for mine the 54"" was $1400 and the 60'' WAS $1900 but the dealer had priced a used 60'' with hyd lift and angle for $1500.
I told him to put the used blade and a new 48'' tiller on the used 2003 BX1500 I was dealing on.
Every thing was good and ready to go until he got the tractor in that had the used blade on it.
Dealer calls and tells me the blade is junk and nit fit to sell.
I say OK just order me a new 60'' blade.
The dealer goes to order it and finds that the 54'' Manuel blade is the only blade option for a BX1500, But he can order the BX23 or 24 $1900 60'' Hyd lift and angle front blade and try it on the BX1500 I say go for it.
So the dealer got the new 60 inch hyd lift and angle blade; puts it on the BX1500 and it works great and tells me I can have the new blade for the same $1500 he had quoted me on the used blade.
I surely was blessed on that one!
2*I only had to wait about 7 to 10 days to get the new blade in and installed,
3*A 42" manual lift and angle blade on and old 1966 Bolens garden tractor was what I pushed snow and other stuff with for 30 years or so. I guess after 30 years I got tired of the manual deal.LOL
4*If it wasn't for my wife saving me from making a big mistake back in 2004 when I bought my BX24 I probably wouldn't have any of the 3 Kubota BX tractors I own.
One of the greatest blessing of a good wife is she can save a man from himself.

One way to tell if you have the old seat is this; Does it feel like your sliding forward when sitting in the seat on level ground?
That's about the best way I can describe the old seat feeling, plus it was extremely uncomfortable to sit in for more than 30 minutes of mowing.

The new seat is great, it's actually level and comfortable. If you still have the old seat, look at the link I sent you and in the first page or two there is a Kubota TSB that states that any new Kubota sold after a certain date will receive the new seat free of charge.
