Ok, I'm gettin flaky. Test drove a green 4300 or such and such a thing this weekend.

It was a sweet box. As usual, the sales dept. was hoochin on the water pipe when quote time came around.

I wanna think the orange L2910 is a better machine. HELP ME!

ARGH!

Tell us what you plan on doing with the machine... so we can "help" steer you in the right direction... /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

The 4300 is a much beefier machine than a 2910. Just feels like there is a lot more too it. A better comparison would probably be the 3010. I test drove both the 2910 and 4300, and that made an easy choice for me, the 4300. If I had driven a 3010 it would have been closer, but the hydro pedal would still have turned me off, in addition to the color (no offense to Kubota people, just personal preference). Green's a bit easier on the eyes early in the morning for me.

I looked at the JD 790 and the 4XXX series Deere's along with the NH TC29D and the TC33D and Kubota's L3000DT. All of them looked like good machines, however I was most impressed and got the best deal on the Kubota, which I purchased in July.

Happy tractor hunting

I don't know much about these models except to say that the hydrostatic pedal is a matter of either getting accustomed to or just being used to something else and trying something new. The rocker style like Kubota works very well but my first attempt with it was one that at first I to thought was awkward. With the Kubota, its hard to ever get forward and reverse mixed up when you are not looking at the pedal. Now comes the part in favor of Kubota. The hydrostatic transmission is arguably the best made in the compacts. JD is coming out with a new line of compacts and until they come out, I would not consider the older 4000 series. The new series as discussed here will be the 41XX series and will no doubt be equipped with a new design in hydrostatics as my local JD dealer mentioned. Color, you'll never loose your Kubota in the woods but the JD's disappear real easy.

P.S. The really heavy duty John Deeres come in bright yellow

It's a sorry sight to see your tractor made into a jack-o-lantern in the fall..... /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

My insurance company asked if we bought a Kubota.... you got a JD, good... can see 'em as well. Got a discount.... /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Oh, if you believe the insurance story.... I got an older urban bridge for sale..... /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I too thought I had to have a green machine. Like Butzkeg stated, a L3010 is a direct comparison for a 4300, not a 2910.
Fortunately, one of the dealers I went to sold both John Deere and Kubota. I was able to compare and drive a 4400, L3010, and a 2910. The L3010 is what impressed me the most and is what I bought. I still like the looks of the green but it is not the product a Kubota is. The salesman took me to their service area and the only tractors being worked on were green. Kubota has this compact series down. I went to 3 Kubota dealers and they all said the same thing-very little goes wrong. The L3010 rear axle housing and trans are cast iron, the John Deere looks like aluminum-magnesium. The L3010 ps cylinder is up out of the way, the JD hangs down behind the axle. Like Rat said, the HST is flawless sa mine has been thus far. Drive them all and buy what fits you best,
don't go from a sales brochure or dealer recomendation. Just my 2 cents.

Too explain my position a little better, all the machines I looked at were great machines. I really had to find something to set them apart (maybe not by a great distance) and decide. I would have no problems buying a Kubota, but there were a few small things "I" preferred on the Deere. Some of these models are sooooo close, that it could come down to picking the color you prefer.

JM,
Land: I have 6.2 acres .. 2.5 are grass paddocks, 2.5 are finish lawns and the rest is woods / water.

USES: Moving Penny and Sasha's manure piles
maintaining a 10x1000 foot easement known as my driveway
hauling nature's forestry debris around
and finally, finding ANY other lame excuse to put some hours on the tractor. This morning, I actually had the fantasy of having the CFO empty their stalls directly into the FEL each day. I will say "hey .. why make a pile over there, we'll just have to move it anyway ... go head and just dump it in the loader ... I'll take care of it ... " If I park the loader close enough, she just may go for it.

I have an 18HP LX JD for mowing and light hauling. It's sweet, but I need something more substantive.

Somone else told me that comparing an L2910 to a JD4300 is a mismatch. If that's actually true, then there is a gap between the model lines. For instance, I think the JD4100 is a lil impish compared to a 2710/2910. Anyway, the 4300 was a wonderful machine also but as you may have seen my other pricing threads ... looks like I'm going to have to buy out of state and deal with the slings and arrows of being a lowly maintenance burden on my local dealers regardless of paint schemes. Pisses me right off.

I've posted some pics if you'd like to see the homestead.
