Planted "Contender" green beans late April. This is the second year on a new garden spot. Last year, the beans did not do that well. I have been putting my neighbors pig poop on the garden and it is starting to pay off. It is going to take some time to get the garden where I want it but I am happy with these green beans. First picking was right at a bushel and plants will need picking in another two days. Once these are done I will plant another couple of rows in July for late beans. I LOVE my green beans. Going to be canning these bad boys tonight!!!!

Every green bean conasure should be able to eat some fresh from the field at least once in their life. The same could be said of beans put up by home canners that can do it well. A neighbor once enlightend me to something which for years hid from me in plain sight. On a 3 acre plot planted in food crops ,the row direction was rotated 90* one year. All that year's plants were remarkably robust where rows crossed bean rows from previous year.
Growing up where every family had a garden, pig poop wasn't used where food was grown. I'd be interesting in hearing about research on the matter. Currently I windrow horse and cow manure, seed with night crawlers, keep it damp and covered with old carpet until worms move into new additions.

Be careful with pig manure, as it can carry trichinosis as well as other diseases. Just like dog and cat crap,it's recommended that you never use it on a garden grown for food.

Having said that I let mine rot for 2 years then ran it through my soil sterilizer, heating it up to 160 degrees to kill any pathogens or parasites. If you wash your food well, it probably isn't a concern; yet who can resist eating a fresh string been or radish when you're standing next to it after a long winter of canned goods.

Having seen dozens of abandoned pens, those that held sheep, goats, cattle and horses were much richer than pigs as evidenced by weed growth and plants from feed seed. Some fellow gardeners say livestock urine accounts for a portion of difference. Barn fowel manure test's high in N but if not combined with litter doesn't improve like others.
Many composters strive for high heat within their bins for the same reasons and say it also kill's weed seed viability. To me the added effort isn't worth the time. I could understand the use of soil sterilizer where space limits conventional methods, material is limited to pig manure or other special consideration. Are you using pig poop for lack of other choices? I spend almost as much time on experimenting as planting and harvesting.

Contenders are good producers. I grew them for over 20 years and we always had plenty to eat, freeze and can. But last year, I switched to pole beans because I can pick them standing up. Bush beans are very productive, but a lot of work to pick.

Yeah, I do pole beans too for the same reason. Not sure what variety I'm using...I just save the seeds from the end of season beans that are kind of tough. They are quite productive.

So, I put the pig poop down last fall and spread it out. It had already been sitting at my neighbors in a pile for at least a year. I did not know about some of the diseases and that your not supposed to use it. Never really thought about it. Thanks for letting me know. I should have researched it some more. My other neighbor has been using in his garden for years and never had an issue. That being said, I am having second thoughts about using it again. I have a cousin that raises cattle and I can get his poop instead. I tilled the stuff up in the ground with the soil a couple of months before planting. The garden was pine trees and stumps when I cleared it and I was tilling the manure inn the ground to help out.

I also use 10-10-10 vegetable grower and calcium nitrate for side dressing the plants. I like my calcium nitrate. It greens the tomatoes right up and helps the corn as well.

Anyway, I really enjoy my green beans and will be eating them until I turn green. ;)

Starting to get both bush beans and asparagus beans. Bush beans will bear and then peter out. The asparagus beans will keep coming, no matter how hot it gets.
