Great Time to Buy Shrubs and Trees

With winter on its way, this is a fantastic time to scour the local nusuries looking for good deals. At least in the NE it is. A lot of places don't want to over-winter their trees and shrubs and are getting rid of them AQAP. I snagged up five beauties yesterday for less than half price. The Plum and the Red Maple are outstanding. Can't believe they were still in the yard. I'd call around if you're in the market......

-7' Austrian Pine $60
-12' Pear $95
-10' Plum (perfectly pruned) $100
- 15' Red Maple for wet area $110
-Blue holly $15

you and i are on the same wavelength - i do this every year @ this time.. can you tell me where in VT you're finding fruit trees? my farm is in s/w NH (near keene)..

i'm specifically looking for pears/plums..

I generally buy this time of year just so they can start getting established before our hot dry summer sets in. Unfortunately, I don't see that much of a price drop off for the most desirable trees. The problem is that there is an area north of Dallas and Ft Worth that is about 50 miles east/west x 40 miles to the north in which they are building (and this is no Texas tall tale) literally 10s of thousands of new houses per year. Our relatively mild winters don't slow the building rate very much as it rarely drops below freezing more than a few days in a row. So the nurseries stay pretty busy year round. The population of every (used to be) small town on the north side is growing at an unbelievable rate.
