Greasing steering box on 2500 Series, Pics

OK. I did the "dirty deed". Not all that bad and you don't really have to remove the steering box cover, but I did anyway to show what happens when you do it the way Cub spells out.

Remove wing nut (red arrow). Then pull bolt out. This is located on left frame rail just in front of the left floorboard:

Pull top of cover out and then slide cover down(they say to remove it, I think, but no need to do that. Disregard arrows for now. Next two pictures:

From here it's easier to put grease gun on zerk fitting from under the tractor(just above front of deck) Grease fitting is at end of arrow:

Now, to see if you got enough grease in, see 3rd picture and see red arrow pointing at grease(red) coming out of steering shaft.

Now, raise cover back in place. See 2nd picture and make sure the tabs are in place correctly. Green arrow shows this tab goes over the other cover and the red arrow shows this tab goes under other half of cover(blatantly obvious when you do it).

Replace bolt and wing nut. You are done.

Very easy.

On my 2542 there is a grease zerk towards the engine under the cover where the half moon gear mounts to. Did they change the steering design over the past couple years? Just curious

I guess. I was expecting to see a grease fitting inside there(since the manual and the label on the cover says to remove the cover) but I did not see one. Possible I missed one but I looked and felt around in there for one. The one on the half-moon gear was more easily accessible from under the tractor since it is under yet another cover.
Was expecting to see one on that housing mount in picture of red grease coming out but there is none.

There are two zerks. You missed the one in front. Most people do. That's why the cover has to be removed.

Use air to clean the area and you will see it.

I cleaned out the grass that collects there(only been used to cut like 3 times and cleaned after each use) and felt around. Will look again and post pics for others to see. Will check the online manual to see where it might be.
Sorry to post inaccurate info but this is how we learn I guess.

Must be obscured by the cover.........I didn't remove ..........duh!

No problem nut. One can be lubed and done better from underneath. The one yo missed is hard to see if there is any debris on it. I have a pneumatic grease gun which makes the job a lot easier. And you will see the necessity for removing the panel once you find that elusive zerk.

Since you are going back in would you take a pic of that zerk so others won't miss it?

Thanks

The other grease fitting: The arrow on the left shows it. This is the main fitting you are supposed to get when removing the cover. The arrow on the right shows the rough location of the one you get from below the tractor. As you can readily see grass clippings collect in there like crazy. This is a NEW tractor that has cut grass like 3-4 times. Take the cover off and blow that stuff out of there!
