I have a Tarter RC4 mower and the grease fitting in the u-joint on the tractor end of the pto shaft is missing. The shaft is Italian and I'm reasonably sure the thread is metric but I have no idea what it is. Anyone know what the thread is?

Take one from the other end to measure? It could be anything from M6x1, M8x1 or more common, 1/8" BSPT.

A few years ago Zoro had a special of grease thread gauges, so some of us ordered them. We sorta had in mind making a chart.

What we found is that there isn't much consistency on modern compact tractors. You are as just as likely to find that they are British Standard instead of Metric.
Our Kubota came new with at least three differently threaded grease fittings. The old JD two cylinder built in 1958 has larger, coarser threads, but even so not all are the same.

Grease fitting threads are shallow fine threads often threaded into thin gauge metal, and all too often the threads are short and sloppy. Several sizes are close enough to cross thread so easily its hard to decide what they were supposed to be.

What I ended up doing is ordering an assortment of zerk fittings from Amazon. Even so, with the old zerk in one hand, plus the gauge, and the handy assortment .....it can still be a guessing game.
It's fun though....

They are still available from zoro and others.
A bit cheaper here.
