For the second time in a row, I've loaded my grease gun with red grease (not sure of the formal type description) only to have it leak an oil-like substance from the plunger end.

The first time it happened i thought it was just cheap grease (Walmart) or it was simply old. This time however, I got it from TSC (but was still cheap) and it started draining within a couple of weeks.

Its been a hot summer down here in NC. Could that cause the grease to separate? Or do I just have to pony up and spend more that $1.95 for a tube of grease? Thanks.

it's entirely normal, ESPECIALLY in hot environments for a lil oil like substance to seperate out from the gun grease.

no big deal.

Thanks Soundguy. I guess being from FL you an expert on hot environments. :D

Anyway, I should have googled this before posting the question. Here is a link from the Mobil Oil site saying it's pretty normal:

What's the Liquid Dripping from My Grease Gun?

I put an old sock on my grease gun, to absorb that oil. And when I used it today, realize it is time to grab another old sock. :D

That is normal today since formulations of grease have changed per regulation. I just went though this last week on some old equipment I was working on. I had used up all my goey old yellow stuff and went to get more. Can't be had in stores anymore. Ended up buying surplus military aircraft grease. Stuff stays where you put it. Cheap too! 40lb pail-$20:thumbsup:

Is that a synthetic grease? I know you can get synthetic 'gun' grease from the military.

I greased the ATV today and noticed my grease gun had also leaked onto the rag I keep under it. Happens every summer when we have our couple of weeks of 100 plus temps.

Yup, was always what I knew as "normal" too. Synthetic or mineral based, they all did it. Until I bought this:

Power Tools - M12 Cordless System - M12 Grease Gun

No more dripping. Shot five tubes of grease thru it so far, all on the original battery charge. Way nicer tool than I deserve.

give it time, often a brand new gun seals a little tighter but they all seem to leak eventualy, unless they dont get very warm,or are used almost daily or more. but either way nothing to worry about as others have said
