Tractor
Gravely 16-G
Hi all, I recently acquired a Gravely 16-G with a hand clutch from a neighbor. After changing out the battery and giving the carburetor a good cleaning I got it running and it seems to run really well. It idles smooth, shifts in and out of gear fine. My question is this, it runs and drives fine however when I engage the blades and attempt to mow the grass (not overgrown in the least) it bogs down and stalls out. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, everything turns freely.

Sounds like the motor is either starving for gas or for air. I have a 16G. It's an excellent tractor.

That's what I was thinking as well. But, having never had a commercial quality mower I was hoping that I was just doing something wrong. I really love the tractor. I had admired it for years watching my neighbor use it and when he moved last week he put it in my driveway as a going away gift. I'm really looking forward to using it once I get it all squared away. Thank you very much for your input, I really appreciate your time and advice.

I have only had this problem once. The gas had turned hard (varnished) in the carburetor. Not sure what caused this. I took the carburetor apart and cleaned it with carb cleaner. That was years ago and haven't had a problem since.

Im just going to change the fuel lines, replace the air and fuel filter and tear the carb completely apart and with any luck that'll solve the problem.

It's a basic and very strong tractor. Easy to fix. It won't take much to find the problem.

Thank you again for the advice. I replaced all the fuel lines and filters and the tractor is an absolute beast. It doesn't miss a beat, even in very tall grass. It just keeps on going and asks for more. I'm in love with this tractor. I'm thinking of breaking it down over the winter and restoring it to it's former glory. I've been looking for another one to use as a donor for parts and they seem to be very pricey. Are they valuable?

I'm sure you could find a donor somewhere. Maybe call a few Gravely dealers. Sometimes they take older non-running tractors in trade. Our local Gravely dealer does this and then has an auction every spring of everything used that was traded in: mowers, tractors, trimmers, blowers, etc. And there are mower junk yards around here if you can find one in your area.
