I had this problem with soil/mulch built up against the house when I purchased it. I graded away from the house to get the level down. Then I dug a trench about 6" deep and 8" wide around the foundation. I put landscape cloth at the base and filled with river rock to a couple of inches above grade. After 5 years I have zero weeds in the stone and no apparent soil washed into it. It has worked out so well I did the same thing to my pole barn after I resided it.

Going to start digging in earnest today. Looks like putting down lanscape cloth is the best bet. Still ruminating over width and depth but it will be better whatever I do.
