Officially started tractor shopping yesterday and have already made some positive progress. My wife decided that we were getting a grand L instead of the MX5100. She is not tall and found the tilt steering, adjustable seat, arm rests, etc allowed her to be very comfortable on the tractor.
One of the models i'm looking at is the 5240 since it is about the same hp as the MX5100 that i originally wanted. After spending a lot of time last night looking through the specs in the brochure i saw that the 5240 has less hydraulic flow and driving speed is slower than the smaller L tractors, this didn't make any sense to me. Everything else seemed "normal". See the specs below to see what i mean.
Anyone know why the 5240 would have slightly lower specs compared to a lower hp tractor?
Thanks

3940, 4240, 4740, 5740 - hydraulic flow 14.7 gpm

5240 hydraulic flow 14.1 gpm

3940, 4240, 4740 top speed is 16.0 mph (5740 is 16.1)

5240 top speed is 15.5 mph

The l5240 is rated at 100 rpm less than the 5740. This will account for the slightly lower speed and hyd. flow. Same tractor to a T just de-rated slightly.

The lower flow/speed will be inconsequential (for the most part) since (again in general terms) most of your work will not be done at transport speeds or the last .6 gpm of hydro flow.

That being said, since the platform is essentially the same between the 5240 and the 5740, I am willing to bet that the price difference would be not so great to make it an easy choice to go with the 5740.

The 5740 is a turbo with a full 50 pto horsepower.

The L5740 and L5720 have identical engines but the L5740 gets its added power by turning 2700 rpm at peak power rather than the 2600 rpm peak of the L5720. That 100 rpm difference is the speed difference. All the smaller Grand L's also run at 2700 rpm (according to my Owners Manual) except for the L5040 which isn't available as hydrostatic.

That makes perfect sense and is something i should have noticed. Both the 5040 and 5240 turn 2600 rpm and have the lower hydraulic flow. It's not a big deal for me as the 5240 is already more tractor than i would need i was just curious why the lower ratings.
thanks for the help.

As a side thought, I wonder if a 5240 owner could simply adjust the injection pump to allow the engine to fuel to 2700 rpm instead of 2600 an essentially turn their tractor into a 5740.

Even though it's the same engine there could be a difference in turbo pressure or volume. While it's always possible I couldn't see why Kubota would sell the 5240 for (I'm guessing) $1000 ish less if all they did was a cheap tweak.

The 5740 has an intercooler to deal w/the higher heat/rpms. Tweak a 5240 w/o one and you'll roast your engine over time.

No inter cooler on the l5740:thumbsup:
