When considering pollution from locomotives, consider this. A typical train might haul 3,000 tons of freight 500 miles and consume approximately 3,049 gallons of diesel fuel. ... (3000 tons x 500 miles) / (3,049 gallons) = 492 ton-miles per gallon. This efficiency might be stated as “a train can move a ton of freight 492 miles on a gallon of fuel.”

Seems like we should get rid of trucks and ship everything by rail.
Agree, but I’d like to see it shipped by pipeline in more cases.

The industry has moved on from programming and delete kits, those just attract the attention of the EPA. The new thing is to gut or block off the emissions and keep the computer thinking it's all there. These new engines make plenty of power stock now.

The EGR is plugged off from the back side and a hole is tapped before the EGR valve to keep "Fresh" air moving through the intake instead of old exhaust.

The DPF is gutted and the before and after pressure sensors are tricked by moving them to a mini DPF outside the real one with the proper fixed pressure differentials.

The SCR so far has been just kept as is. No way around that yet.

It's not perfected yet. Like the EGR has to have the same flow of air to keep the air/fuel ratio correct.
The mini DPF has to have longer wires made up. The pressure is regulated by a manual pop valve...It needs to be electronically controlled, but that will soon be fixed.

It's a cat a mouse game. There is too much money and demand for the industry to just go away. The EPA can't stop demand and that is what keeps the innovation going.

There's still plenty of deleting going on out there...I tell the guys on the Duramax site I'm on to keep all the stuff they removed. The garages around these parts are telling me that as part of the safety (not emissions) inspection, the diesel emissions system will have top be intact or the truck will fail inspection. This hasn't been enforced yet but they say it's coming and soon.

I have a 2019 GMC 2500 L5P. I get 18-20 mpg running empty on the highway, 15mpg mixed. From what I see, it costs anywhere from 7k-10k to delete these...No thanks.

My state could care less about all this stuff...

We have shops advertising this service. Hell, our governor was a rancher and pretty sure drives a deleted truck. :ROFLMAO:

I've never heard of many of the things you mentioned and I drive a Cummins.

What's going on is, people are importing software from Canada and Europe. Canada is more free than we are? What a deal, sports fans.

But, yeah. You can get the tune box from Canada or Austria. John Deere tuners are coming mostly from Ukraine from what I understand.

I wouldn't tune and delete mine for S's&G's, I would do it when the VERY poorly engineered EPA garbage breaks down and you get a repair estimate of $5,000 with a 5/50 warranty (5 minutes or 50 feet).

If EPA is so enamored with this garbage, why don't THEY warranty it? They just sit back and mandate garbage that nobody can produce. Such is the totalitarian state we live in

First they came for Big Trucks and I didn't speak out because I didn't drive a Big Truck.
Then they came for the Passenger Truck diesels and I didn't speak out because I didn't drive a passenger truck diesel.
Then they came for Big Diesel Tractors and I didn't speak out becaue I didn't own a 6 figure Big Diesel Tractor.

Then they came for me and there was no one to speak out

I see no point in deleting a perfectly operating truck.

Wait until the EPA crap breaks down and you're looking at that bill.

Wait until you go into limp mode in BFE with the whole family in it and a 15,000lb load behind it. And the nearest diesel repair shop is run by the Boys from Deliverance, who I'm sure will offer to put your wife and children up for free but you gotta stay with the truck.

Then, when it happens again.

And again.

Hopefully, you'll be fortunate and never have any of those things happen to you. I wouldn't wish it on you or anybody else. I'm just saying, that there are plenty of people where their EPA garbage took a dump and it's like, "Sucks to be you"

Wonder if Warren Buffets diesel locomotives have pollution reduction devices that reduce durability and reliability?
Something tells me the Oracle of Omaha can afford it, but the average landscaper with a 35hp tractor has a much more difficult time affording a $4000 DPF system.
Locomotive emission regulations:

Warren's BNSF moves 800+ tank cars each day from Alberta to Texas.
A very profitable business for Warren.
Warren says: Pipelines suck! 🤣
Very good for me as well. I hold Berkshire Hathaway stock. Warren is a very astute businessman.

Bottom line is, despite the current administration's adversity to pipelines, it's still the safest and cheapest way to move petroleum over long distances with minimal interruptions and much safer than rail or road transportation.

I bet Warren holds stock in pipeline companies like Colonial or Pan Handle or Enbridge. Be just like him to cover all the bases.
