What is even worse is some of the tool catalogs - they can't construct a correct sentence, either. And they're getting paid to do it...

I've often thought that when I retire, I'll offer to proofread for some of them - ask for "store credit" of a few bucks for each page I read... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

( Okay, let's list every preposition and learn to never end a sentence with one! )

So there was this guy visiting Harvard who needed to find the bathroom and accidently asked an old english teacher (male), "Where is the bathroom at?"

To which the teacher replied, "Here at Harvard, we don't end sentences with prepositions."

The man responded, "Ok. Where is the bathroom at, jerk?"

(Well, the story uses a different word than "jerk," but you get the idea.)

In any case, ending sentences with prepositions is considered acceptable now as there was no reason for the rule in the first place. Modern grammarians and the newest grammar texts allow it. You will find them used regularly in well edited journals, magazines and books.

Now an improper zeugma, or syllepsis for those who don't know what a zeugma is, that irritates me. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As my old professors stated in my engineering classes, “if you can spell, you don’t below in engineering.” I must agree with him since I horrible on grammar. Any math is fine, show me a English book and I walk. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We didn’t put a man on the moon because of spelling….. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Henro, I like your post. Please note; I've never corrected anyone's grammar on any post on this site. I just couldn't resist the chance to join the humor. That being said, I have enjoyed picking apart so called "professional" writers and professional "speakers" and radio announcers. If it is your profession , and you do it poorly, you are doing a poor job at your profession.

My neighbor who I rely heavily on to do all my diesel work cannot actually read. Is he stupid? I think not. He is very good at his chosen profession. I would not dare challenge him on knowledge of the compression combustion engine. Don't think for one minute that he doesn't enjoy teasing me about getting in my tractor with dress shoes and a suit though! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif This is not a thread about judging a person's intelligence! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Not by any means!

Harv, a funny thing is that I found English to be relatively easy, don't remember ever making any grade but "A" in an English class, and had two college professors who tried to talk me into being an English major but I always hated English classes because grammar was just boring and English literature, especially poetry, was worse. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif But to hear me talk, you'd probably think I never took an English lesson. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I agree. The only times I really got upset about someone's written messages was when our daughters were still in school. I don't know how many times they brought notes home from teachers with misspelled words and every other grammatical error you can think of. (Oops, did I err ending a sentence with "of"?) /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Absolutely, this was not aimed at anyone, just some humor during the most boring part of the day (work or not).

I got sucked into another thread called "Can of Worms."
Ooops /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I bit hook, line, and sinker. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

AMEN! I worked for twenty years with a person who could tell you all of the errors on a memo but didn't have a clue what the memo said!

While I lived in the south for a short time, my daughter had a big problem with her third grade teacher......I finally went to meet with her and discuss the problem. After brief introductions she said "The onliest thing Nicole does is sits around and looks out the winder"

I felt like I just had a long conversation with Festus Haggans Wife (Gunsmoke).

We sold the house and moved six weeks later.

Tdog, ROFLMAO! See, doesn't that sound better. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Shall we start now about dangling participles? Gees, that one really gets me! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif The first time I had a report marked up for me having a dangling participle I wuz reddy to open a can of whoop a$$ on that prof! Uh, oh. Did I slip?

Before someone takes this wrong, a participle is a word that looks like a verb, but functions like an adjective. Anybody have some examples? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Here is a better one, has anybody ever ask you "what is your gender"? If so, you should reply that you do not have a gender, but you do have a ***; either male or female. There are three possible answers to a question of gender. The possible values of gender are masculine, feminine or neuter. Therefore, the proper use of the word "gender" is to classify nouns and pronouns as masculine, feminine, or neuter; he/she, him/her, or it. Clear? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Yeah, I'm quite aware that some people now accept the word "gender" to be interchangable with the word "***". However, to be correct, it isn't.

Therefore, the question of "gender" has nothing to do whatsoever with a dangling participle. Got it? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Man, do I love humor on proper English! You guys know I'm just a total ball when some stuffy "intellectual" or "academecian" is giving a public speech and butchers the English language. That is when they are fair game! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Actually, with all the code that was in the programming for the lunar missions, we DID put a man on the moon because of spelling.
