grain grinders

im thinking about adding a small grain grinder to my collection of "farm" kitchen appliances.

I could get fresh wheat and corn from neighbor farmers and am thinking id like to try grinding some. (mmmm fresh wheat bread and corn bread)

So if you have one or have experience using one let us know.

Let me know, I know where there is a good deal on a Hammer Mill located here in the Houston area.

Vita-Mix is essentially a small hammer mill, and serves many purposes. We've had ours nearly 20 years. Won't do well for large quantities, but for a household, it could be perfect considering all the things it will do.

I would recommend the "Country Living" mill and buying it from here:

I do not have any affiliation, just a happy customer. It is a solidly built mill and can grind to a bread flour fineness. Many less expensive mills can't grind very fine. Other options I would consider would be the ones sold by Lehman's. However, I think the Country Living model is the best quality for the price (Lehman's nicest grain mill is made in europe and costs around $1300).

Whatever mill you get, you will need to bolt or clamp it down to a very sturdy table or countertop.

Also, if your interest in a grain mill has anything to do with preparedness planning, I think a non-electric mill is preferable to an electric one. The nicer manual mills can be motorized if you want to - I know that the Country Living and Diamant both can be.
