Looking for a way to store 25lbs 50lbs to 100lbs of horse, chicken, dog, and cat feed ect...
Want to keep mice, coons, squirrls, pollcats. possums.and dogs out of it. Thick plastic garbage cans got nawed through. Thinking about 55gal metal drums. Thought I'd ask to see what you guys could come up with. Kids jobs are to feed but thiink they would have trouble reaching into and sealing back up a 55gal drum.

When we were raising show animals we would store feed in an old chest freezer. We turned it up on one end and raised it up a little on blocks. Could stack about 10 bags of feed inside away from the mice. If moisture is an issue place a low wattage light bulb in the top to keep the moisture down.

A standard size metal trash can works great for storing feed. They will hold three 50lb bags of feed. Kids can easily get to the feed at the bottom, handles make them movable, and they are weather and rodent proof. Rodents are a fact of life around feed storage areas and metal cans will keep them out. Mike

+1 on the standard trash can, I use that for our chicken feed and just put 150lbs of feed in there. Just make sure its where you want it before you fill it(i also have a smaller garbage can to keep in the coop for the winter time.)

We use regular metal trash cans. Cheap, last a long time. Some of mine are 20+ years old.

What the heck you got gnawing through garbage cans to get at grain?

We use plastic 55 gallon drums with a piece of 3/4 inch plywood cut for a lid. Ours are cut down to about 2/3 height and my kids have no problem with them.

Here is what we use, have 2 for 3 feeds and treats. Holds 4 bags each, 2 on each side of the divider. Keeps everything out but ants. I spray around them once a week for that problem.

You can still buy old fashioned galvanized steel 35 gallon garbage cans. I bet your local farm store sells them.

Your 20 year old cans are a lot more rugged than the thin metals cans being sold today. I dare not rest a 50 lb. bag of feed on the edge of a modern metal trash can or it will bend.

Sure wish everything being made and sold wasn't getting lighter, thinner, cheaper, and almost useless.

Stop feeding the cats so much. No mice or rats in our barn. I have large bins for our horse feed, but there are always bags for the other animals around. I've never had one chewed into.

And stop killing snakes. Between the cats and the snakes, I haven't seen evidence of a mouse in the barn in years.
