Graduation gifts.....

Isn't that pretty much the gist of this whole conversation, i.e. a favor worth receiving is deserving of a thanks? To not thank someone, especially for a graduation gift of $100 shows me a lack of class, not to mention a lack of respect and an ungrateful attitude. It also says something about your character and the type of person you are. High school grads should be given some latitude, I think, because they are dependent, but they should have been taught better...and it still sends a message. Ungrateful adults are another matter; failure to thank someone sends me a message that these are not the type of people that I want to associate with...and I can name a few in that category.

As for giving to individuals who are not close friends and not family, there are always reasons. We received an announcement from a young man that we had never met, although his mother is a customer of my wife...a seamstress...who had done work for her. She also had a radical mastectomy recently...and came to our anniversary party. She and her husband are acquaintances, yes, "friends", yes, but close friends, no. Did we send him some money? Yes. Did he send a thank you note? Yes.

Do I expect a brass band and a plaque with "thank you" engraved for every little favor? No, of course not. But if you're my neighbor, and I bring you a grocery bag full of tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and peppers fresh out of my garden, do I demand a "Thank you"? No, but if it isn't acknowledged in some way, it's the last you'll ever get. Just a "thank you" is sufficient.

Well said 2lane.

The OP still did not answer the question if he got a "thank you" when he gave the card in person. I find it hard to believe that you personally hand deliver a graduation card and not one "thank you" when you fork over the card?

There is a difference IMO between a teenager not sending a thank you card and doing a grown brother a huge favor and not getting a verbal "thank you" from that brother. Ironcially enough, that same grown brother who didn't give thanks had the same parents as the person doing his brother the favor.

As you've said, do a favor and feel like you didn't get your thanks that you deserved? don't do the favors anymore. Next time for graduation, give $25 and you won't feel as bad if you don't get a thank you:D (the student should be working anyways for their own money IMO).

It appears that some folks who raise their kids to not bother to send Thank you cards also own tractors.

I'm guessing most here teach their kids to write thank you cards. What it appears here to me is most people are telling the OP not to lose sleep over it, and if you give, give with the expectation you may not get a thank you. Calling people vulgar names dose nothing for your cause IMO.

Agreed

No argument here.

Gosh, never did I imagine my thread would garner so many responses....and I REALLY APPRECIATE all the input from the members who agreed with me that a proper "Thank you" is correct in many situations. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU !!!!

And for those who disagreed....I am simply going to ignore what you had to say....FOR OBVIOUS REASONS. Because I don't feel your contributions are worthy of appreciation.

There....I said it.

(I'm meaning this post as a joke, just to clarify, not intending to be mean-spirited at all - just want to make that clear. It's hard to tell on a message board sometimes...)

Does this mean that if you received gifts from all of us, you would only send "thank you" cards to the ones that gave you gifts that you liked?

There...I said that! (Quoting Dale Gribble from King of the Hill)...

Good luck and take care.

Two questions you never answered, did you actually know the people well or not? (as I quoted, you've given two seperated posts which contradict each other) The second quesiton was if you did know these people and you hand delivered a graduation gift, you never even got so much a thank you when you dropped off the card?

I do love your statement "and for those who disagreed? am simply going to ingore what you had to say". You probably have no clue that you've shown as much maturity as those who you hurled insults agasint because you didn't get a "proper" thank you.

I only hope you're over the age of 35.
