took a swing cy from BH to local NH dealer for seal repair
said I needed to replace rod/had scar on it
MERCY !! seal kit,rod and labor over $550
Bet the cyl new would be cheaper/ ya think?

You can look for a good used, or get the parts separately and do it yourself..

Take it to a hydraulic repair shop. That is way too high.

Get the seal kit, does not have to be a NH kit. After market kits are available. Depending on how bad the scar is, but I would probably just use some 400 grit wet dry sand paper and sand the rod smooth. Obviously only if the scratch is superficial. Maybe post a picture of the scar. I would think that a seal kit would be less than $50.

yea,I know-pitchers on the subject is worth $ / I just don't have a way to post them right now- I guess now I should have told service mgr to install seal on old rod and lets see how long it last/ after all it was a swing cyl - not bucket tilt ,etc
I blew it out pulling on a stump/scar or pit on rod looks to be not a fresh wound either

Based on the number of threads I see with leaking seals on cylinders,the repair shops should have plenty of work

Yep, nh parts ain't cheap. Go to messicks and price the whole cylinder. It would give you a heart attack.

My 5500, for kicks , I priced some of the cylinders. $1800-$2500 depending on what one.

Hydraulic shops are a lot cheaper. Old likely could have made you a new rod, and rebuilt with new seals for less than half that quote

Usually I only worry about scratches in the rod if you can catch a fingernail in it and I try to buff them out with the thought being if it's smooth it won't tear up the seals
