We have a chain link fence with two lines of electric fence on the top. While fixing some erosion problem threatening to take our fence I touched one of the lines with my head and got 10000V hit. After I got hit I found myself somewhat disoriented laying in the mud. I clenched my teeth so hard that my jaw is still hurting. I have to tell you I feel sorry for the deer trying to get over.

<spoken in your Mother's voice> Well, I guess you won't be doing that again, young man!
[that is, of course, until you do do it again]

Seriously though, I hope that you had a very good 'lay down' on the couch and waited for your heart to stop racing... I speak from experience as a retired Navy electronics (Radar) tech. Our unofficial motto was "If you weren't zapped today you weren't working!"

I have been hit by an electric fence many times but never anything like that. Guess you just got lucky. :) Ed

Wow, you don't fool around -- most people touch it with an arm or leg, but you went straight for the head! :D

Sounds like you hit it just right. Where you wearing thin soled shoes? I've been zapped a couple times just getting too close to mine and it was like a super static electricity shock. I've never touched the wire, just got close enough for it to jump over and get me.

I've heard that some country kids like to play a game to see how long they can hold onto the fence.

I've been zapped before when using my fence tester. Feels like a strong static discharge.

They also play a game to see how long someone can pee on it. Didn't work too good for a town kid that went to school with me almost 50 years ago. Had several to have Dr visits.

We planted several thousand trees on our property that need protection from deer. The protection evolved over time from single line zigzaging from tree to tree to 5 ft proper fence. Since 5 ft is no barrier for deer I added two poly electric lines on the top increasing the effective height to almost 7 ft. They would still get through it breaking the line in the process. So finally I replaced the poly with wire and used the strongest charger I could find. The charger would fry the poly line and weed touching it. My fence tested goes over range when checking the lines. I had to replace all corner insulator because the original were arching so I believe it generates quite powerful pulse. We had no deer intrusion for at least a year now. Not they are not trying. I found a deer hoof stack on a barbed wired located just below the electric lines. So I know how the deer feels when hit.

I got nailed by a weed chopper about forty years ago. It was a single strand strung through the woods along the boundary between a private owner and the timber company I was working for. We were running a traverse along the property line, I was out ahead brushing sightlines. As I ducked under an overhanging tree the head of my axe brushed the wire, did I mention that the ground was wet and I was wearing caulk boots? My feet hurt so bad I had to sit down for a few minutes before I could stand on them again!
I have touched a few since but nothing like that one!

I saw a couple of those videos on youtube looking for the holding onto the wire ones. None of those where very funny. The best where with the girls and one with a gay boy that was good. I don't know why, but there is something very entertaining in seeing a person put themselves into a position of getting hurt, then seeing it happen just like you know it will, and everyone laughing about it!!!

When I was a kid we used to walk home from middle school and had a lady with horses in a electric fence. We used to see how long we could hold on it really wasnt that bad once you got past the mental part of it. Not sure what the voltage was but I got to the point where I could hold on for as long as I cared to. Was fun every year when a new kid started walking home and we dared him to grab it. We also used to trade licks with the bamboo stalks growing at the same ladies property who every could take the most licks won. Usually it was a tie between me and my buddy chris who both werent the best kids growing up and both had fathers who knew how to discipline old school style. We came home with some pretty impressive bleeding welps. :/

Now im a electrician and have grown to respect it a little more. Some things we do as kids.....

I never saw an electric fence until I built my own, and I was never zapped by one until I got too close to my own fence. Hopefully I never grab the wire, but I doubt that I'm that smart.

I knew a guy that pee'd on one twice in one week. No he did not do it on purpose. both times it was an accident, the first time in the dark and the 2nd he was in the back of an old building and pee'd through the crack and hit it. You should have seen the look in his eyes. Ed

I helped a buddy install a fancy wooden gate in a walled garden in Upstate NY some years ago, on a 600 acre estate that employed 6 full time groundskeepers. The property was enclosed by a 9' "invisible" wire fence, to keep deer out. They had fenced it, and left a corner open. An army of "beaters" marched thru the woods to drive all the deer out, and they closed the corner. I was told that anything less than 9' wouldn't work to keep the vermin out. The neighbors got a slight increase in their deer population, I guess.

Relative in Mississippi grows a couple of acres of watermelons which the deer LOVE.

His solution is a single strand of electric fence and peanut butter. Put the peanut butter on the fence wire (smear sum in a glove, run the wire through the glove). The deer love peanut butter. They take a lick and get a hefty shock, and are smart enough to not try a second time.

Add me to the list of victims who accidently took a leak on an electric fence. Probably 35 years ago I was out near the barn after dark and didn't realize I was that close to the fence. WOW! that got my attention.

I was foolish enough to run a Tough Mudder a year and a half ago. The last obstacle is a muddy spot with some rows of bales to step over and a bunch of hanging strands of the plastic fence wire hooked up to a fencer. The ground connection is so good through the mud it is pretty much impossible to stay on your feet when it hits you.

Worst I was hit was squirrel hunting as a kid. Was walking through wet weeds and was soaked up to about my thigh. Backed into the fence and sort of fell into it. It burned me good enough it left a big whelt. I let out a holler, my dad didn't know what had happened he just heard me beller. We had a good laugh after but man that hurt like a SOG.

I've been zapped a few times but once while walking through a pasture gate that used to have a mud bog at the entrance, I slipped and palmed the poly tape to keep from falling. I made a noise I did not think I was capable of making. Sure it hurt, I took a knee for a moment. The good news is nobody witnessed this! Lol

When I was a kid working on a farm, we used to test the electric fences all the time by touching the fence with a blade of grass in our fingers. You'd just get a slight tingle rather than the full hit.
