Anybody found them cheaper..? We also bought sweet potatoes for 38 cents a pound...Just curious about prices elsewhere..
Got a Thanksgiving Turkey for 68 cents a pound...How does that compare ?

I bought a frozen 15 pounder for 69 cents/lb and sweet potatoes for 49 cents/lb. They had house brand turkeys for 49 cents/lb, but I passed on those.

Our Turkey is 19 pounds and it is a Kroger House brand...but since it was Kroger it did not bother me...What worried you about your house brand...? The other Turkeys were anywhere from $1.19 a lb to $1.79 a lb. and I did not see any difference except the expensive ones had a pop up timer....which we don't need...and a seasoning package which we would throw away...

Turkers here in the OKC metro area are running $1.98 for FRESH turkeys, to 98 cents for frozen Butterballs. The house brands, cheapest I've seen was .79 cents per pound, provided you bought $25 worth of groceries. No problem there; usually our bill runs about $300.
Any of you remember the good old days (circa 1950's) when Mom would get up at 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning to put the turkey on? It had to be a hen turkey; the Toms were just too darn tough. I'm pretty sure they were all free range turkeys in those days, and were not frozen. They often cooked up "dry" because the cooking time was so long. My Mom had the knack of cooking a huge turkey and it coming out moist, juicy, tender and delicious! And that was on a kerosene stove!

The house brand is Hannaford's. I have found the quality of their house-branded stuff to be uneven, but, of course, for all I know the turkeys came from the same processor. Ain't food labeling fun?
We don't have Krogers in this area. Years (40) ago I worked for Krogers, and at the time they had a real commitment to quality meats. Beef especially, we got our deliveries of beef in pre-aged hanging sides or quarters. They did use Argentine beef trimmings in 40-lb boxes for hamburger, but the rest of the beef was all cut in-store.
Don't know about Krogers, but that isn't the way meat is retailed in chains around here now. Most of it is received pre-cut, pre-wrapped, some packages have had oxygen removed and then filled with nitrogen. It doesn't even smell good when you open the package, always a whiff of decay.

My local Ford dealer usually sends me (along with a lot of their other customers) an e-mail to stop by and pick up a free turkey; Kroger's turkeys. But I haven't gotten such an e-mail yet this year. But since one of our daughter and her husband are doing the turkey and ham this year, I don't need a turkey.:laughing:
