I'm sure quite a few of you already know this, but for those who don't...

If your F-150 (year 2000 and newer) 4x4 indicator light (high or low range) doesn't come on when you flick the 4WD switch, it's likely the transfer case shift motor on the side of the transfer case.
Before calling a repair facility, get under the driver's side and you'll see a dark cylinder attached to the transfer case. The cylinder is mounted cross car rather then fore/aft.
Using a dead blow or rubber mallet, give the cylinder a few taps, then try engaging 4WD again.

My 2006 Supercrew just had this problem and I read this tip on one or two of the F-150 forums online. It did work for me...maybe it'll work for you.
Per those forums, the problem results from not using the 4WD much.....it's suggested you run your truck in 4WD high at least once a month.

Thanks Roy. I've had my 2007 F150 for a couple of years now and am always looking for things I need to be doing to keep the truck running forever. I do pop into 4WD frequently going up my steep gravel drive, just so I don't make a mess by spinning the tires.

Yep, not using the 4x4 once a month will cause issues along with not changing the fluid every 50,000 miles.
