I'm a noob to gooseneck trailers and have a question regarding the tail length on these trailers. I've noticed that over the wheel beds commonly have 5 ft tails whereas the lowboys frequently have 2 ft tails. I assume that a 2 ft length on a lowboy approximates the same degree of incline as a 5 ft length on an over-the-wheel design: is this true?

On a regular 5' dove which sets higher than a 2' dove, On the 2' dove tails the trailer is setting low already and dont need the 5' dove, far as the incline they do very on each maker of the trailer but are very close. I have a 30 GN with a 5' dove tail, its a low profile trailer, so it dont have the same incline as a regular GN. If it did the the tail of the trailer would be very close to the ground.

Ok, this might help, these two trailers are from the same maker "Longhorn" , but mine with the tractor on is a low profile GN. and the other is a regular GN, notice that the inclines on each trailer are differnt, and you can also tell by looking at the height of the ramps also. But the bumpers are about the same height from the ground.

More or less, yes it is true. Most deck over trailers have a deck height of 36" and the lo pro models have a height of 32". Low boy trailers look to have a height of 23" to 26" depending on the model. (14k trailers have taller tires than 7k or 10k trailers)

32" deck height (deck over) and 10' ramp (5' DT + 5' ramp) = 15.5 degrees
23" deck height (low boy) and 7' ramp (2' DT + 5' ramp) = 15.9 degrees
36" deck height (deck over)and 10' ramp (5' DT + 5' ramp) = 17.5 degrees
26" deck height (low boy) and 7' ramp (2' DT + 5' ramp) = 18.0 degrees

One maker has a 6' DT so a low pro from them would be
32" deck height (deck over) and 12' ramp (6' DT + 6' ramp) = 12.8 degrees
DT=dove tail

Hopefully this answers your question.
