Good set of tools for the boy?

I took the plastic cased and dimensionally cut them to fit the drawers of my rollaway.

Work perfect for that

One of the nice things about a case with a spot for each tool is that you can easily see if you left something when you finished.

A place for everything and everything in its place.

Thing that scares me about craftsman is it seems to a brand that an investment company buys now, then subs out the work where-ever. Don't know that for a fact, but I don't think they have the same loyal following like my FIL in the 70's.

Anyone hear of Genius tools? Came across them and they looked interesting added with their selection. Seems to be around since the 70's, made in Taiwan but at this point, haven't come across any complaints. They seem to have a pretty big selection...

I guess tools are a worse topic as to what you need compared to anything else, because you still may never have exactly what you need when you need it.

Stanley Black and Decker owns Craftsman (and DeWalt, and a bunch of other stuff). They tried to bring Craftsman production back to the US, but failed in their attempt to automate the factory, and closed it.

If you have access to Wall St. Journal, here's a link to an interesting article about it. Kind of a fiasco. Anyhow, don't want to detract from the thread, so read if interested.

Here is the thing, and this may sound sacrilegious to some here, but after dealing with all varieties of residential and commercial HVAC equipment over the decades, I'm at the point that IMO being made in America does not always equal to superior quality.

I have these cased sets from Williams that have served me well for many years (7+). I travel with tools (by truck) and these help to keep everything well organized. I've found them to be good quality, easily outshining Kobalt and Husky tools.

I've got a set of Craftsmen combination wrenches that the chrome is falling off of. They're about 20 years old and the chrome started peeling when they were only about 5 years old. I buy most of my tools at Harbor Freight now, say what you will about them but I haven't broken a hand tool from them yet. I don't buy the cheapest hand tools they carry though. Menard's Tool Shop brand is junk.

Meh, I’d look at gearwrench, proto and sonic. Knipex an vise grip for pliers, wiha for screwdrivers A decent set of jewelers screwdrivers is nice to have to repair glasses and open electronic battery covers.

If he’s going in the army, I’m pretty sure they teach that everything can be fixed with a hammer, adjustable wrench and tanker bar.

When I turned wrenches in the Army they issued us toolboxes outfitted primarily with SK tools.

I'd never heard of them prior, but I was happily impressed.

You're correct, it still doesn't stop major HVAC manufacturers using the SAME plant overseas to make their equipment though. It's becoming such an incestuous business relationship it's getting harder and harder to keep track of.

Currently there are only two major HVAC manufacturers who assemble 100% of their single phase residential equipment in the United States, and I would not use either one for various reasons.
