interesting article about data centers driving up local electric rates.
don't know why but this relates to you guys in Virginia and Maryland for sure.

just makes no sense to unload this cost on general public unless deals were made.
Deals are always made...
Couldn't read the article, cause it wanted me to agree to their data harvesting, and I despise the commy news network. Our county sent out a flyer yesterday, how the data center would pay 75% of the counties property tax, blah blah blah. I missed the part where the rest of us would have our property tax reduced by 75%....
They have already done some illegal things to try to get the power line ran, that no body wants. In the end, I"m sure it will get build, and the citizens will get screwed again. Any ways, this story is all political, so I'll leave it at that...

They were milling the alley behind our breakfast joint yesterday, which was causing some parking problems. Hope it gets paved before next week...

Low tire light on in the honda this morning as the son was leaving, right front looked low, gauge said 32 psi but put a little in. He said the light never went off. All the other tires didn't look low, but should have checked the left front, as it gets low at times also... But he made it to work.
Had Smoky, snagglepuss, and BB all in a row eating on the porch this morning. None of them our cats, but they enjoy the buffet we offer.
Just let BB in the house, he's playing with cat toys.. Tiger just watching him.

Good morning, the low is 32 and going up to 34°F. Wind WNW 8 mph. 30% chance of flurries.

I'm conserving energy until the next time I have to plow.

mostly, I found this on amazon.com for you: Amazon.com : wood stove door seal

Have a safe day all
Unlike diesels, gasoline particulate filters shouldn't be much maintenance.
Reminds me of when Volvo put some catalyst on the outside of their radiators and found the air behind the car was cleaner than the air in front of the car. I don't recall where the tests were done, but LA wouldn't surprise me.

Sorry for the bad spells. It is hard to reason with a disease. Do something nice for yourself.

We had a nice soaking from the atmospheric river yesterday, about 10% of our annual rainfall, with blustery winds. It is always nice when the downspouts, gutters, and drains work. We have most of the gutters with leaf screen filters now, for ember protection, which helps with leaves in storms. The driveway drain is another story, but it is easier to deal with a coarse screen than leaves in the culvert and pipes. It was a great day to be indoors a with a window open listening to it rain and bluster. Luckily for us the wind direction was hitting the other side of the ridge, so we could hear the wind, and see the tree tops being blown around wildly, but at the house, we didn't have much wind. Very cozy.

One of the cats turned up last evening soaked to the skin, and I mean soaked. I don't know if he was having fun hunting in the storm, or got blown into a water trough, or what, but he was so wet his tail was pencil thin. He seemed completely happy, but definitely wanted in the garage for the night before it got locked up. If only they could talk. He's mellowed as he has grown up; as a kitten he used to hiss and swipe at us when he first came here. He likes to be petted by my wife. He just watches me. I think my working on vehicles and around the shop makes too much unpredictable noise for him. Still, it is nice to have the company, even if he doesn't come close. His mom is a menace, so friendly and so underfoot that I practically trip over her, and has this skill of being able to jump and land on your chest from almost anywhere. I've taken to locking her out of the shop when I'm doing fine work. Plus, she's hyperallergenic to me. We have cats to keep mice down, to keep the rattlesnakes away from the house and outbuildings. Pets and cuddles are icing on the cake. Last winter before they got up to speed we had a pack rat into every single vehicle, and doing who knows what under the deck, beside poop sprinkles everywhere. I'm gearing up to screen in the underside of the deck. Keeping mice out is going to be an interesting challenge.
Not today.

Today is for on site projects near the house as I supposedly have a signature required package coming. The truck needs tires and a smog check, so that's going to have to be next week.

All the best,

Peter

Same things are going on around Metro Detroit. One that is going on west of DTW airport. Sued a township to get approval. Because the township cannot afford the court cost. Our governor is supporting getting these centers built. Money talks is the problem.

My wife's first job (after we got married) was at Hechingers. Wasn't a good experience for her....
I liked Hechingers, for a while there they had free coffee and doughnuts on Saturday morning. And the local one had some bodacious "clear it out" sales. One time the (~ 1987) manager had to get rid of a overstock of 1x2x8's. Something like 20 cents apiece. I had a '73 Dodge B100 van, took the back seat out, filled it. Still working off the remains.

Data Centers are a huge deal for this area. And yes, electric rates have crept up in recent years and are projected to double in a few years (I think I read two years) time.

The overall growth pattern though is also in play. A lot of people want to harp on datacenters but when your introducing 10's of thousands of people into the area, that also hits utilities.

Unfortunate but the deal in VA means electric utilities pass the cost down to all taxpayers for infrastructure buildouts.
Northern VA is pretty unique, whole DC area including Dulles packed with high value places
and folks want to live and work in the suburbs in that area.
I think it's the connection to the Pentagon and NSA and rest of alphabet soup in that area.
Seems we are building up the IT brainpower in huge leaps in your area.

I wonder if when I go on Google AI and ask them a question,
does it cost you more money?
that ain't right

The largest concentration of data centers in the U.S. is located in
Northern Virginia
, which is widely considered the data center capital of the world. Other major hubs include
Dallas
Silicon Valley,
Phoenix, and

Chicago

now I have to smile at the new hit Debbie Data Center does Dallas

since I pay the toll on their site, I don't feel bad about cut and pasting.
lot of this talks about Maryland.

Nike Carstarphen’s electricity bill is rising, even when she’s using less power.

The Baltimore resident’s electricity rate jumped 20% from August to September, even though she had cut her usage 40%, relying on her air conditioning less during a milder month.

She gets her power from Exelon-owned Baltimore Gas and Electric, whose prices jumped an additional $32 per month on average in September.

These higher costs are driven in large part by new neighbors in Northern Virginia: the world’s biggest cluster of nondescript, power-hungry data centers.

Data centers have powered the internet for years, but with the rise of artificial intelligence, they are projected to need eye-popping amounts of power, along with costly infrastructure upgrades to deliver it. A 2024 report by the US Department of Energy estimated that data centers would use between 6.7 and 12% of the nation’s electricity by 2028.

Utility customers in neighboring Maryland and Washington, DC, are some of the first in the country starting to see the impacts of the data center boom showing up on their residential electricity bills. The higher costs for BGE customers like Carstarphen are being spread across fall and spring months, when usage is typically low. But they don’t show up as a line item on the bill; the costs are tucked into customers’ electricity supply charges, which typically denote how much energy they consume each month.

“Existing customers are taking hits now and will take much greater hits going forward,” said Maryland People’s Counsel David Lapp, the state’s top official focused on consumer advocacy for utility bills.
