Good Morning,
So on Monday I stop in at this community lunch in town. I have to set up the situation a bit.
A friend along with a number of volunteers, hosts this luncheon for the homelss community. It is a mid day ministry. I stop in when I can.
It is in the parking lot of a church near the downtown core
They have a 20 ft sea container to hold chairs, tables, covers, supplies.
Set up, take down, every Mon, Tues, Fri - 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM
Several businesses and volunteers, donate coffee, baking, meals (soups, hot dogs, hamburgers, pasta salads, caseroles etc) ... quite a variety, changes ever time.
Anyway, I stopped in on Monday, and joined them all, I know many of the volunteers. I sat down on a stackable chair, had a old TV table beside me to hold the coffee, juice meal etc., and was served my lunch. On this occasion, a few minutes later at about 1 pm, some of the volunteers are starting to clean things up and put things away. While most people are still chatting, it is a bee hive of activity at that point, and I am just trying to stay out of the way, finish my meal, coffee.
I struggle to get up at the best of times and (unlike most people who just stand up) I have to use brute arm strength for leverage on my cane, a chair or whatever, and some precarious balance until I get my feet under me and balance. So I ain't moving quickly, but they are still there serving for the next half hour. I car ry on with things.
A volunteer gentleman (term used loosely) whom I do not know, got in my face about needing the table, cleaning up etc. He came to me 3x in about 2 minutes and was pretty frustrated with me for holding up his agenda. There was no need to rush, lots of time left. I managed to get up after the 3rd time, and perhaps he saw my cane, the struggle etc, or was told by someone else - well, 10 min later he came back to APOLOGIZE, I assured him that things were fine, all good. I'm standing there holding my cane and the coffee (no lid) - I really can't move, my brain freezes in place, I need to finish the coffee before I can walk around. I need personal space, to adjust and balance etc, but he less than 2 feet away chatting with me. I'm almost falling over. I listen and deal with it.
With his apology he begins to expain that he is scarred from head to toe. I figured that it was a spiritual reference and that he was a sinner, needed Christ etc. I only knew that he was another Christian volunteer. I was not prepared for the story that followed - this guy is a LEGEND
I had heard the story before, but now I was meeting the man.
About 15 years ago, when he was in his 60s, he survived a very nearly fatal GRIZZLY bear attack. He arm wrestled the Grizzly, and killed it with his 5 inch pocket knife. TRUE. Amazing. Stabbed it numerous times with a pocket knife, did not wound it, killed it, on the spot. He says that the 3 cubs ate the momma within 2 days, as they were starving. Incredible story. He has the Grizzly taxidermied and mounted on the wall in his home. Visible reminder God is Good. He said that he asked that it be completed with several of the knofe wounds visible in the mount.
This guy "Grizzly Bob" is a LEGEND in this area. The body length scars are physical and spriitual. so what if he has a few quirks. All good.
