Good morning!!!!

RNG wanted to see some kayaking pictures from last week. Careful what you ask for ...

On Sunday the 5th, we went to Crystal City Underground near Crystal City MO to do some cave kayaking through an old flooded sandstone mine. There was a group of about 20 people plus two guides. The youngest stepson and his girlfriend went with us, first time in kayaks for both. I was the last to get a kayak, so they put me in one of the guide boats with an LED lightbar on front. We also all wore headlamps.

One of the chambers opened up to the outside, a stark contrast to the darkness inside the mine.

A small opening between chambers just wide enough for a kayak to get through.

There was one area they call "The Squeeze Box" where the ceiling gets so low that we had to lay flat on the kayaks and walk our way through with our hands on the ceiling. My head was scraping on the ceiling at a few spots, with maybe two feet between the surface of the water and the ceiling. It was a fun experience, but definitely not for anyone claustrophobic.

On Thursday the 9th, we went back to the scene of the crime on the Big River near DeSoto MO. Same route as last time, from Mammoth Access ramp to Brown's Ford Park. The skies were ridiculously blue this day, with very few clouds.

We stopped on a small pebble beach a little over halfway to our destination and had a light lunch, then just sat there awhile and enjoyed the sounds of nature.

This was the small pebble beach we stood on last time to ride out the thunderstorm.

There was some very nice scenery that we missed last time because we were paddling with our heads down trying to get through the rain. Bluffs with caves.

I didn't know this until we reviewed the pictures later, but I did get a shot of the tree that dethroned me a month earlier. It's the large trunk in the water on the left of the picture, laying in the river now (it was still sticking out of the bank when I slammed into it). With the water level higher this time, taking the inside of the turn made it easy to avoid this time.

We had a better system for shuttling this time. We bought a pair of foam temporary racks and strapped the kayaks to the top of my car to carry them back to the trailer, rather than going to get the trailer, then going back to get the car.

No uscheduled swims for me this time. It was a long day paddling 11-ish miles, but we enjoyed it.

On Saturday the 11th, we went to Chatham IL to paddle up Sugar Creek again. Getting across Lake Springfield was a bit of a chore, as it was quite windy. Once we got to the creek, though, the trees shielded us and we only had a light breeze, which was most welcome on a 90° day.

The entrance to Sugar Creek is always inviting. The trees on the right are actually on a small island.

The pile of tree debris that we were able to pull ourselves through last time offered no way through this time, and portaging around didn't look fun. So, we tethered the kayaks together and ate a light lunch floating in the creek.

The placid waters of Sugar Creek are always a relaxing time.

When you come to a fork in the road ...

We scouted a few other places along the Sangamon River near Springfield IL after we loaded the kayaks to leave. We're definitely enjoying our time on the water this year.

Drew, if you like downward facing saw blades have you looked at track saws (or do you call them plunge saws) ? They produce a super finish and are a great alternative to a table saw for working with flat pieces of timber. I bought a Makita one a few years ago. At the time it seemed a lot of money, however it was worth it as the precision of cuts puts it into a whole different league from when I used my old circular saw with a timber batten guide.

Eric, that's a really good idea and it stores away in a lot less space than a table saw.

78F and partly cloudy @ 11:00, heading up to 86F for the high.

Plans for today:

Get a couple more holes drilled for the peach trees. Found out they are a dwarf variety (supposedly) and are freestone.

Apparently they like lots of sun, so somewhere out in the front yard is probably the best bet as the trees have grown so much in the backyard that siting stuff so it gets a full eight hours of sun has become a challenge.

After that see if I can't fish the stand for the PHD out of the pole barn and bring it over to the house so the PHD can be removed and the box blade put on.

Then a quick trip over to the neighbors to palletize and pick up some stuff, some of which is likely destined for the scrap yard.

After that put stump/shrub bucket on and start filling planting holes with screened compost.

Beyond that, hopefully get The Woman to trim back the forsythias closest to the house (west planting bed), so they are easier to handle during transplanting.

Also clean up the last of the sticks and branch remnants from the top of that dead ash tree that fell over there.

Need to get to tarping dirt pile down at the pole barn before tomorrow and do some compacting of soil over there as well.

Hope everyone has an enjoyable, productive, and safe day ... (y)

Roy, here's one for you.
Yeah, I'd seen that thread...
The newer 40xxR Deeres, like the 4066R you looked at, have no option for a mid-PTO. It's my understanding the first year of the models did.
To me, a hydraulic front snow blower seems like a great way to go (other than the price)

66°F and no rain

Nothing major planned. Piddle around with some small tasks I need to address before heading off to town.

Nice out doors gathering for Happy Hour yesterday. 5 couples and plenty of good food.

Prayers for all
Be safe
Have a great day
