Let some people put solar on their place for their own supply.

if nuclear winter comes, solar is SOL. If Yellowstone blows up, could be close to nuclear winter.
But if they ever makes batteries that are smaller and more affordable, I'd be second in line to generate my own solar power.
I like the self reliance aspect of that. As it is now, you have to make a very large investment, witness David/Sodamo, RNG and others who
generate their own power. Unless you have no choice , like living off the grid, the payback for full house solar is likely to take a very long time.
My electric bill is 110 bucks a month. Last year the farm was 3-400 a month, so take the biggest number and round up to 5 grand of power a year.
Now divide 5k into the total replacement value of David's solar and gen setup.

If you can't break even in 10 years, tax help here would help, not many folks are going to spend the money for solar.
Unless it's a family generational farm. Need to take a very long approach to spending that much money.
I'm talking about a power system that will generate 200 amps continuous.
That's only half of a typical modern 400 amp service, but maybe we can learn to live on less...

If one is a "prepper" does one plan for a future without electricity?
If power goes off entirely, so does your water supply for most people and sanitation. Much less heat and a/c.
We are back to the 1850's. Not for me, I want my hvac to work...which is why I have a backup gen.

Belt and suspenders. Have to have backup. Unless national grid can adequately handle it, including major earthquakes,
therefore bringing in juice from afar, which they clearly had a problem with in Texas, pretty risky to just hope no combination of factors
will bring the whole operation down.

We have become too fragile to safely operate without electricity. We have made our lives dependent upon it.
So we had better make it reliable...
Am hoping this is a wake up call to lots of folks in power gen.

Ready to switch to energy conservation mode.

Fed and State taxes efiled. Fed already accepted.
Pleased to be getting a refund, but think wife a bit disappointed when I had to tell her it wasn’t enough to buy her a new tractor. I’m thinking she’d really like me to get her the MT125 my dealer has to replace her mowers.

Don, any reports on your Tempest wx station in your extreme wx?
Our Davis is being a pain in the butt, won’t stay online. Sophie watched the Tempest videos and impressed. I suggested our tax refund would support getting one

Went out and plowed snow so I can get mule around house and barn. Then pushed a large pile of snow back for neighbor. On way home tractor wanted to pull right. Thought it was snow build up between wheel and axle. Nope. Flat tire. Got tube out. Tested new tube before installing. Rubber cracked and split open. Been on shelf too long. Will get new one at TSC tomorrow.

I like the ambient station I got.

Harvested some white worms, fed fish, front glass on five tanks cleaned, one tank topped up, 18 gallons of (hard) water drawn (still have more to do on that)

Fired up Kubota and did a little clean up on pavement, once I got some of that exposed things started to melt pretty quick. Came in when my toes started getting cold.

Calling for rain/snow in the morning tomorrow with a high of 38F .. might get out there tomorrow afternoon and do a little more on it.

BEF - IIRC, friend's plan initially contemplated 20 vines/plants.

Ag exemption applies to all the acreage except for one acre around the house.

The tempest stay on-line the whole time we had power or a charged UPS.
The only time it went off-line was when we had a day of 2 hour blackouts and the UPS did not have time to recharge and the base unit did not receive power. When the power would come on I just unplugged it from the UPS for 10 sec then plugged it back in and it was on-line again. The top rain sensor had an inch of frozen ice on it and finally stop recording frozen rain. I was surprise that it still recorded rain with about an eight inch ice. It was recording rain after my cocorahs rain gauge filled with ice in the top funnel and was useless.
It always gave the correct temp and all other functions. It's still the best one I have owned. Its forecast temp, wind and rain were very close to actual.

edit: The battery in the outside unit with the built in solar recharge did exceptionally well. It always reported "good" even after 6 very overcast snow days it still showed 2.51 watts. Now after 2 days of bright sun it shows 2.81 watts.

I just noticed it is sold on Amazon now and it has a 4.5 star rating, I have not read any of the reviews.

Did a video chat with my brother in hospital. He will go to rehab in hospital sometime, he’s not sure when.

bummer  Well that quickly ended that project for the day.

 Can't expect it to measure snowfall, I'd even expect the wind gauge to get crusted up

I mounted it too close to the house so it cannot detect a strong South wind it as well as if I had mounted it on the roof. But If I mount it on the roof I would have had to go high so the temp would not be affected by the roof. I just take the predicted wind, it seems to be accurate enough. It has always shown wind direction correctly. This would be the same with any weather station mounted in the same place.

Thomas, you have some seriously spoiled kittens!

Don, that spice sounds good, I bookmarked, thanks

Period ?

Well, I guess that means this whole debate on fossil fuels vs renewable energy is completely settled then ... right ?

Somehow I suspect that might not be the case ...

Well, since corporations are people, that would include them as well ... right ?

Until so called green fuels are self sustaining, as in likely never, Kyle is 100% correct. Have you checked the carbon footprint of windmills, solar panels and electric cars? They can’t mine, transport and build themselves, they can’t recharge themselves, etc...

Don, wondering if you have seen this, and your opinion on the news from the American Heart Association on recent coffee studies. I just heard about it while listening to a podcast while roasting...and then looked it up...seems like they've associated drinking BLACK coffee with as much as a 30% drop in heart failure. Also seems decaf can have the opposite effect. I'm always a bit leery of "studies," so value your opinion.

Today’s COVID numbers again down in 700s, and total hospitalization under 1000 for first time in months.

Got taxes filed.

21 this morning, 39 for a high, 26 now. Supposed to be 48 and 1/2” of rain tomorrow. Everything is a wet sponge now. I’m glad I have good elevation, especially in the front.

Had tuna steaks, California medley and mashed potatoes for dinner.
We took a nice ride this afternoon, Ellen and Gracie both like to ride, so if they get grumpy I just take them on tour.

Maryland’s positivity rates are way down. About 4% two week average and 2% daily. I’m hoping it continues improving and no glitches this time.

Short answer: I do not disagree.

In Dr. Greger's book he writes 9 pages of studies of coffee. There have been studies on coffee's effect on different medical problems.
Some medical conditions have a negative effect and some positive, many factors including age. Positive effects seem to have higher numbers but he concludes:
"I cannot recommend drinking coffee, though. Why? Because every cup of coffee is a lost opportunity to drink a potentially even healthier beverage - a cup of green tea."
