Good morning!!!!

Yesterday was a leaf day at the farm. I took the time to put the cart bagger on the mower. It is a pain around buildings but saves time running back and forth to the compost pile. I wish I had sharpened the stock John Deere blades which kick out less leaves than the Gator blades. I wish I had remembered to put on my high top boots so I spent the afternoon with my shoes full of leaves. I moved a lot of leaves. I almost think one more mow will finish the season. Seems early to be finished.

I hope you all are taking care.

Chris

one of the impetuses for building the new giant toll bridge

Drew, I read that PA is thinking about putting tolls on a lot of bridges because they don't have the money to keep them up. Won't that be a pain?

Drew if you strike out at the hardware store for stainless hinges, try-
Stainless Steel Square Butt Hinges With Holes, No Finish
My preference is to always support the locals first, but they are usually limited in their selection. McMaster Carr is another great source, but can be pricey.

Thanks.
Here's what I ordered. Will let you know how the Chinese workmanship is. Two hinges on one side of birdhouse floor, held closed by a pin, which I could not find priced
reasonably in stainless. I like the marine pins with retaining wire but worry a bird may hook a leg in the wire so decided not.

When I get them in I"ll go compare them to what the local hardware store has and what each costs per unit made.
I could also use brass as an alternate metal, but stainless is much stronger.

I drill a hole through the side of the birdhouse into the edge of the closing floor board, about half an inch into the floor and
half an inch of shaft left to pull on/out when needed. Two hinges on one side, one thick steel pin on the other.

39 outside right now, heading to 54 today. Needs to dry out some more.

Low water pressure this AM, not sure what that is about. Need to call the plumber I guess. Just had work done a month or two ago. Sigh.

Car is totaled. Called the insurance company and did the deed. Tow truck should show sometime this AM. Sigh.

Signed off on a contract with a consulting firm for our septic issue. Looks like a new drain field is in the works. Sigh.

No local hardware big box stores are carrying flipping porch posts. Looks like a road trip is in the works. Sigh.

Hope all have a good day. Be safe.

Sorry about your problems...reminds me of this Robin Trower song...

36°F and clear skies this morning, only going up to 50° today. A touch of "November" returning for one day, before we head back into what some here are calling "Warmvember." We'll be back around 70° for the weekend.

Drew, our nearby town of Trenton IL was reportedly named after Trenton NJ. It's a quiet little town of about 2600 people with no real crime to speak of. The only known murder there was in 1977, when two brothers' argument turned ugly. We live about four miles north of town.
My only experience in New Jersey was in the Newark area, when I worked on a pipe organ at a catholic church in the suburb of Scotch Plains. I remember it wasn't long before I was asking the local organ tech who was chauffeuring me around how on earth that state got the nickname of "Garden State." He told me the rest of the state outside of Newark was beautiful, but that area was pretty much NYC's dump (he used more colorful language, not appropriate for this forum). Scotch Plains was like every suburban area I've ever been in. Everyone I encountered, though, was very nice, even in Newark proper.

Good morning all, 29 going up to 48, cloudy - it's like walking on sponge out there
One car off to shop for brakes, big $ again. But we got the car cheap, used and it is in great shape otherwise. Previous owner must've been heavy on the brakes.

Drew - I use a needle oiler for my saw nose bars, seems to work well- the NH Lambertville bridge was "upgraded" around 2003 and they fixed the walkway and replaced the surface panels. It was fun watching them do the work. I lived in Princeton Junction then can came over to visit wife's family in Yardley.
Had oil burner doing bad ignition-spray oil and then take a while to light -whoosh- on contract, had to replace transformer for igniter- no charge
Rip - sorry to hear about car and pressure.and Septic too. Well - car shopping is fun, until the price comes up
Popg - barometer looks great!
Wng - was listening to Robin Trower while driving on Sunday.

PJS - most of south central NJ is still farms and cranberry bogs, and the Pine barrens, used to love both road and mountain biking down there.

Stay safe and be well

Good morning to all! Low of 33, going up to 65. About 10 degree higher temps than normal for this time of year. Definitely dryer than normal. Supposed to have a cold front come across this weekend, dropping temps back to the normal range. Maybe a chance of a shower, but too far out to guess.

Drew, I remember going over to "Jersey" as a teenager in that area, and noticed a big difference in the population and way of life.... we rarely went across the bridge to never-never land! I sometimes really miss the whole area and the old history, but after being out here in the wide open ranges, I don't think I would be able to handle all the congestion.
Those are some big hinges (2"x1.5").... big bird houses (hotel style)?

RIP, sorry to hear you might need a new drain field. Are you allowed to replace it yourself? Out here you pay $100 for a permit, take a test, and if you pass, you have 1 year to complete it. They do 4 inspections, site layout, all digging (for depth/width/square footage), tank/stone/plumbing, then the final. We are lucky to have the opportunity to do it ourselves.... saved me 80% of the cost of contracting it out.
Bummer about the car.....

Chris, when I lived back in the area, I used to enjoy the smell of all the leaves being burned, a true sign of fall. Out here, I don't have to rake any up.... the strong winds blow them away to Texas! A favorite past time as a kid, was making those giant piles of leaves, then jumping into them. I remember giving some very good 'scares', jumping out of the piles to unsuspecting people walking by..... usually my sisters...

PJ, oooo...Newark... bad, bad memories.... A rough area today for sure! The southern part of NJ was a much nicer area of farmland and suburbia. Not sure what it is like now, I'm sure a lot less farms.

Popgadget, nice mount for the barometer. Is the altimeter part still working? Looked like high elevation....never mind... went back and saw it was in "100" feet increments... not thousands....

Got the start of the parts for the desk glued up, then planed. All the parts that needed to be joined/glued. Now just a bunch of individual pieces....
Today is errand day, so probably won't get much done in the shop today. That's ok, this is all for pleasure, no time deadline.... it's nice to take the time and enjoy making something. Already have another project lined up.... a wooden "treasure chest" for my granddaughter. I had made one for each of our kids when they were little, all three of them still have them.... 30 years later. Now time to do some for the next generation....

Everyone have a great day!

Robin Trower, often called the white Jimi Hendrix.

30 at daybreak, 52 now and 56 later. There were some unexpected showers in the area early, but missed us, we didn’t need it anyway. Low of 30 tonight, 46 tomorrow and 27 tomorrow night.
I didn’t do much yesterday and today might be a repeat performance.

Have a great day.
