Thanks all for the prayers and + thoughts for my daughter with vision issues. She is much better, vision returning to normal (still very sensitive to light, not perfect vision yet, but certainly going in the right direction). We've been trying to help middle daughter on their house building project.. they are almost done with prep to have concrete slab poured for daylight basement (scheduled pour for tomorrow), have some grading to finish, foam, plastic and rebar, then put the loops in for radiant heating. They are young and hard workers so it will go well. We might go after late afternoon to help finish if they need more hands. My 5yo grand daughter helped yesterday also, she was working hard, fetching whatever anyone needed, wanting to do more. I had to get after her a couple times when she was crowding my SIL as he was cutting a sheet of foam to fit.. She started calling him "Bud", short for Buddy..

RNG, had to look at my CPL to see when it expires. Good until 6/2021. The local gun range offers similar events to check out your reflex in that 2 seconds. My guns are all locked up in a safe. By the time I got one out and ready to fire I would be well past my 2 seconds.

I suppose, in this day and age, I'm doing things all wrong, but I know, at least from the time I was 3 years old, I've never lived in a house or home without at least one loaded *******, and never "secured". When we were small kids, I guess we all knew that Dad's loaded .22 ***** was in the closet in his and Mother's bedroom, but we also knew we weren't to go in there. I got my first .22 ***** when I was 10 years old, but Dad told me to always unload it before going into the house. However, he gave me a .22 revolver when I was 17. Then I became a police officer when I was 24. When we had two daughters, my service revolver was kept on top of a chest of drawers in our bedroom, out of reach of small children, but as soon as they were old enough, I told them to never touch one of my guns without permission, BUT THAT I WOULD UNLOAD IT AND LET THEM SEE AND HANDLE THE GUNS ANYTIME THEY WANTED TO ASK. Neither of them ever did.

And like you, Ron, I just went and looked to see that my CHL expires in January 2024. And I can't even remember the last time I carried a gun. I do clean and oil them once a month (usually).:)

I was raised the same way, and I used to do the same, Bird. Then one evening I got home just at sundown from a bicycle ride, and hopped in the shower to clean up. About the time I was finished, I heard something go bump in the house somewhere, and outside the bathroom door it was pitch black. And there I stood, naked as a jay bird and my revolver across the room next to the bed. I thought to myself, what if someone had broken into the house while I was in the shower and recovered that revolver, and they were now waiting for me to walk out from the bathroom. That was an ah haw moment, and from then on I resolved that none of my *******s would ever be used against me. You might call it paranoid thinking, but a few minutes reading about home invasions might change your mind...

The event description didn't include any mention of the force-on-force training, Eric. I've played in exactly one paint ball game in my life, and I didn't care for it. Besides being very physical, I didn't like being shot at, or being hit for that matter. And like you, the same rules have been drilled into me as a child. There comes a time, though, when events around you cause enough concern for your own safety that a new set of rules come into play, and what better way to learn them than from the same folks that enforce the law?

One of the scenarios started off with me outside a building I was told was my home, at which I'd arrived after receiving a phone call from my wife. On that call, she told me she'd barricaded herself into a room after someone had broken down the door, and that she thought the person was still in the house with her. Where I live, it often takes a deputy at least 30 minutes to arrive after being called; you can't stand around with your hands in your pockets under those circumstances. I didn't do very well. At the second door I had to clear, I held the ******* too far from my body and the bad guy attempted to snatch it out of my hands as it went through the door. I maintained control of it and directed it at his body, ending the fight. But it was a very effective teaching technique!

Surprisingly, I learned that the facility was funded completely with donations made at events like the one I attended, and a variety of others as well. That kind of attitude is very rare in California, but in this neck of the woods it is widely supported by the community.
That is awesome.

Same here, Bird. I've been around loaded *******s since my parents brought me home in 1966. As I got older and it was obvious how curious I was, my Father unloaded and handed me his 12ga. It was entire too heavy for me to hold up, and that was the end of that. besides the "right and wrong" of doing something dangerous like that behind his back, I would never have wanted to disappoint him by doing something he told me not to do.

Because bad guys probably won't wait for you to retrieve a locked weapon and load it, the Wife and I keep our every day carry *******s where we can easily get them at night. They are not locked up, and they are loaded at all times, other than when cleaning. We also keep a loaded 20ga ******* within easy access, hidden but convenient. Pretty much everything else is locked in the safe, the ones that we either don't use much or would be difficult to replace.

Our CCW licenses are up for renewal next June.

Checking in. There was a change in plans and we are now in Williamsport, PA to attend my best Bud's Dad's funeral. From aspirational pneumonia to hospice services to the great beyond in 3 days. Another member of the greatest generation joining the ranks of those who went before. I am "son" #5. His time of pain and suffering in this existence is over. May he RIP.

We had a good time in Piseco, NY despite the loss of several old friends since last year. Our favorite restaurant has closed and another is under "new management." It was an easy 5 hour drive. There is no traffic, cellphone service, nor WAZE service in the northern Adirondacks. Beautiful country. The Forester got almost 33mpg.

Eric- Thanks for the laugh. I have snorkeled in some funky ponds and lakes, but never a bog. I can still snorkel without concern about how deep I can go or how long I can stay submerged and can handle higher elevations (+5000) w/o problems.

BEF- I am happy to read you did not have coughing spasms last night and got some decent sleep. Before I take you to task again I better look in a mirror first, but I am watching.;)

RonJH- Yes we both had the coughing side effect from the same med.

Don- Thanks for the recipe. Wifey cooks a couple of different Indian curry dishes and she found a really quick and easy recipe for Naan (bread). Any growth like yours in my garden is not edible. If I remember correctly river monitors are pretty aggressive.

RNG- I have to see if there is similar training around here. I did take *******s training at the Smith&Wesson Academy years ago; there was nothing offered like what you experienced.

Almost all the B&E's around here are by bears. My LTC(Concealed) is valid to 4.2021. My .357 and 37M are loaded and in a lockbox under my bed. Technically not ideal. ;)

My + thoughts, wishes, and prayers.

There are a variety of devices for securing *******s in a ready to fire state, Ron. My favorites use Simplex push button locks that don't need batteries and can be unlocked by feel in the dark very quickly. Longer than 2 seconds, but not much. There have been home invasion robberies in the area, usually associated with marijuana grows, and that scenario was one I suggested to the organizers of the event when they solicited feedback.

I have a small gun security safe. But cannot get into my mind that the gun would be safe next to bed. I have touched my guns in over a year. Maybe it's time to clean and oil them.

:laughing:Yep, that would give you something to think about. Of course when I said I left my gun on a chest of drawers, that was when I was an officer and carried it every day. Now . . . well, they ain't locked up, but they're not out in plain sight either.

Wife and I keep our every day carry *******s where we can easily get them at night

Before we got married, my wife was curious about the guns and she once fired ONE shot with one of my .38s. That's the only time she's ever fired a gun. But many years ago, when I worked the late night shift, she sometimes slept with the S&W Chief under her pillow. And any time I went home before daylight, I called her on the phone to put that gun away before I went home and opened a door.
