Don, looks great. Glad you got such a nice tree.

Farmer, how warm do the chickens need to be?

They are currently 80*F. We start off at 94* and by end they will be down to 65*.

Insulation is not in good shape. 6” of poorly placed fiberglass in ceiling. Then 4” walls that have most if not all insulation eaten out of them by dartlin beetles. Mainly just a layer of double bubble on walls. Plus we are running ventilation fans. Fans run on 5 minute timers. Right now they are on half time. So we use lots of propane. We have burned as much as 125 gallons per day per barn before (4 barns).
As birds grow they’ll start giving off body heat as they feather. Just now getting to a fully feathered bird. 3 weeks. So they will start replacing BTU’s and we’ll slow down on propane use.
To spray foam all 4 barns is north of 40k. And that’s not replacing the wood on the walls. I can buy lots of propane at a buck a gallon for that.

That would be a lot of air conditioning during the summer in Texas.

Hahaha. Yeah it’s a lot of cooling here also. We use swamp coolers to get the temperature manageable. Then we think of wind chills during the summer. Ie. How much air can we pull over the birds and how fast. During the summer we’re in the neighborhood of 160,000+ cubic feet per minute of air exchange. If my estimates (average ceiling height) are correct then we can change the air in each barn every minute. Swamp coolers have a pad area of 4x160 feet. Half on each side of barn. It’s not unusual for us to use as much water each day cooling as the birds can drink. We can usually get temperatures below 80* then rely on wind chills to do the rest, make the birds think it’s cooler than it is.

25 right now...practically a heat wave after the last few days! High about 40 or so today. Although this sounds great, it'll be a thaw and refreeze which will make the leftover snow (still close to a foot after yesterday) like concrete.
We did get a few more inches of snow yesterday...cleaned the drive and walks late yesterday.

Good morning. My last spell of working away for the year is now over. Last night was slow going, driving home through fog while the car traction monitoring system beeps kept reminding me that grip below the rubber on the freezing roads wasn't what either me or the Toyota are normally happy with.

The fortitude of Riptide's piano purchasing wife is remarkable. A little of her inspirational attitude has rubbed off on me too as I have decided to try and learn a little more about music, in particular how it is written down.

At school we were divided into 3 unofficial groups by Mr Parry, the music teacher. Those that could sing (definitely not me), those who were so bad they were excused from all musical events (why or why didn't I get myself in that group ?) and then my little group - the few pupils he needed to make up the numbers, but were not to utter a sound whenever there was an audience. My only musical skill was how to mime convincingly:)

Last night I got my first ever proper music lesson from my wife. 10 minutes on staves and crochets, with the promise of more today.

Hope Mrs Riptides operations end on a good note too.

Good morning all. 45 this morning going to 61,:D Busy day yesterday, got nothing done except the little things that you can't add up at the end of the day. Good day though. Today? God only knows.

Riptides, You and your wife are in my prayers.

We're having a heat wave, a tropical heat wave!

31 now and going to a high of 36 with 60% chance of snow/rain. No wind. Visibility 0.2 miles.
It is snowing heavy somewhere, just not here.

I may have to go out to the dealer to get my marker light today. It depends on how bad the roads were last night from Windsor, ON to Sundridge, ON. and whether or not the highway was closed around Burks Falls.
I will check the radar and that will give me a hint as to the conditions south of me.

Have a good day!

Good morning! it is raining. 61˚. Whipper was knocking at the door wanting to come in to make sure we don't run away because of the lightning again.

The pickup flat could not be repaired. the same spot was leaking that they had fixed a week ago but this time on both sides of the tread. I have the Discount Tire warranty that gave me a new tire but to get the now new tire under their warranty cost me another $32. I aways break even on the warranties - I get at least one "free" tire for each set of tires I buy.
This Fall I have had 3 flats and two replaced tires on my vehicles and 2 flats and 1 replaced tire on Mom's. She does not have Discount tires.

The absolute best invention was the low tire light. I have not had to take off any tires (except the tractor tire).

After doing some shopping for. She went shopping yesterday. Did not get it completed because all the other shoppers overwhelmed her. Exhaust when she got home.
Happy Beleated Birthday to those that I missed.
Randy, a great tribute to your wife.
Drew, sorry I got carried away with the tractors.
Looking, weather here near Windosr was good for traveling yesterday.
Mostly, for years I climbed on roof to clean dryer vent. I purchased a vent cleaning kit at Menard's. Does a great job of cleaning vent.
Riptides, Prayers for wife and you.
Good Morning All.

35 going to 65.

Randy, wonderful that she still lives in others.

Don, beautiful tree.

Farmer, I eat a lot of chicken, and certainly have a new appreciation of what it takes to raise them. Thank you.

Had a good day grocery shopping with Myla yesterday...checked out the new Lidl grocery store, and of course, hit Costco hard.

Dinner at friends last night...shrimp creole...very tasty...good conversation. RNG, one of the men there has a Honda bike...4 cylinders...said it has 4 carbs...I never knew they made them that way.
