Good morning!!!!

Need get up from computer and pour a cup of coffee. 48° with rain this morning. Heading to 51° with rain until afternoon. Got my project complete early yesterday. Then the rains came. Steady since about noon. Looks like close to 2" in gauge. Today may be a good day to get wife to help with cleaning windows inside house.
RS, Lots of Stihl carbs on EBAY for Brushcutters. Less than $20. I can get all kinds of parts for my 031 both used and new including a new air cleaner. I have been able save a few carbs by running Sea Foam threw it.
Eric, good use of slate.
Good Morning All.

good Sunday morning all. Eric, I've never seen slate mulch before. You could be starting a new trend.

I bet that expensive JD mower belt was made of Kevlar. Hopefully the extra cost will equate with longer life.

RS, how many hours do you think you got out of the last set of new sprockets? Ya know, you started out as a little kid fiddling with chains on your bicycle, getting greasy... and here we still are...

going to spend the day in the woodshop today, all the mowing and watering is done, I can just play today. Planted five more trees yesterday, have a butterfly bush ready for tomorrow to finish, replacing something that did not make it thru the winter. The more I plant, the more I'd better get that water wagon ready...and I guess time to think about running a line over from the house to the orchard and use up the large supply of 1 inch water hose I have. While I can do it with my subsoiler, am thinking it might be easier renting one of those gas powered edger/trenches like the landscapers use, which digs a 1.5 inch wide 7 inch deep trench. Besides I can lay pipe by myself that way; using a subsoiler from what I've seen requires a second guiding hand, even with the pipe laying attachment on the subsoiler. As much as I'd like to use the tractor, sometimes there's a better tool...

And I surely need to consult with Larro about my ongoing problem of spigot envy. I've got it bad...;)

Wunderground just updated the week's forecast, chance of thunderstorms every afternoon starting Tuesday going through Saturday, 1/4 inch or more each day. I hope some of those come through; getting dusty here, and I'm on constant water patrol. I try to water the grass seed late in the day after the sun has gone down, so it has a chance to stay damp through part of the night. Otherwise it seems to dry out and bake in a few hours. Looks like I'll have to start putting down straw; a layer of topsoil isn't cutting it, too sandy.

67 heading to 89 again. Maybe rain tomorrow.

Mowed for 3 hours yesterday and feel like I could have planted a garden in my eyes and throat from all the dust that landed there.

Good morning, a wet and rainy morning here. 51F heading to only 54F, had to dig out the pants again but it looks like I will be wearing shorts again tomorrow. Looks like a Black Hawks/Lightning final for the Stanley cup. Should be crazy in Chicago and Tampa starting on Wednesday.

Anyone heard from murph ? ... haven't seen him around lately ...

Still here just don't post here too much anymore. How did your splitter turn out?

Good Morning everyone. On my first cup of coffee with it 67 out but headed to 91. Picked up my cart yesterday, so what do you think Eric?

62F high upper 60's raining.
Finally getting some much needed rain for the next 2 days. :)
Almost finish splitting stacking wood for up coming winter but I just plan ran out of gas...1 more cord to go.

Not much plan for today, run to store and little puttering NASCAR than kick back.

Enjoy the day all.

65F ... heavy downpour just ended and now have a light drizzle/mist ... had thunderstorms overnight.

We've gone from having a rainfall deficit for the month (and year) to being over an inch above the normal average for the month ... and we are within an inch of being caught up on the yearly deficit (a week ago we were almost 4" short) ... and it looks like we may make up that shortfall in the next couple of days.

Since it's too wet to work outside, I started doing some house cleaning yesterday, so it wouldn't all be sitting there for The Woman to do on her days off. Cleaned the kitchen, got a bunch of vacuuming done and really dug into the laundry room ... pulled out the washer and dryer and vacuumed and mopped the floor underneath, washed the walls and ceiling, cleaned out the dryer duct, etc. Still have some to do in a bit to finish all that up.

Fixed two vintage Proctor-Silex "Juice It" juice extractors yesterday ... add those to the two Chi-com fans I did last week. Same problem on all of them - lube for the motors thickens up over time and the motors won't spin. Squirt a little WD-40 on 'em and work the spindle a bit and they run like new. The Chi-coms probably need to get away from the yak grease or whatever it is they're using for lube.

Last year wife brought home some sort of ground cover someone had given her ... plant was about 2' tall, deep purple/maroon leaves and full of blooms ... dunno what it was. Anyways, it ended up dying not all that long (within a month) after we got it planted. Noticed yesterday that we have probably about a dozen or so little ones coming up around where it had been planted. The leaves start out as green and then start turning color after they are a couple of inches tall. So it looks like we ought to be to transplant/propagate it fairly easily.

Hopefully will be able to get the rest of the 1" PVC water line for the out buildings run inside the house over the next day or two, now that I'll have an extra pair of hands to help. Thankfully, only about 30' of it is above dry-walled ceilings in the basement ... all the rest is suspended ceiling.

Hope everyone has an enjoyable and productive weekend.

RN,RS : As you say, taking pictures as you dissasemble something for the first time is a great idea. Only problem for me is that the camera often gets coated in greese. And then there was the time I took a bale wrapper control box apart, confident of the pics showing where each color wire should go back, only for the SD memory card to crash it's file system when I came to put the box back together again. I still take pics but have gone back to paper and pencil for what I think are the critical parts of the process.
LOL ... yup ... sometimes ya just can't win for loosing.

My biggest problem is forcing myself to slow down enough to pay close attention to how something is put together when I'm taking it apart ... ;)

My wife had a smashing day yesterday. She broke up old pieces of slate and I put them into a mixer for 10 minutes to round them off before screening and rinsing clean. We are filling in the drainage gaps arount the edge of the paving stones. Yes, gravel would be much quicker, however it feels right to make use of what we can from the discarded parts of the old building.
I've begun to pay a lot more attention to what gets put in the trash ... mostly from the perspective of how much we are generating that will wind up in a landfill ... and the legacy that portends for our children. Our refuse hauler does provide a small bin for recycling ... but based on what we generate alone, I'd guess it is probably inadequate for most ...

I found the rain gauge I bought about 5 years ago when I was cleaning the laundry room ... was wondering where it had gotten off to. Cupcake had stashed it in there ... because I was taking too long to get it put up apparently

Today may be a good day to get wife to help with cleaning windows inside house.
We need to do that here too.

58 and drizzling right now...looks like a high of 63 and upwards to 1.5" or rain today!

I didn't get anything done yesterday...woke up with a headache...sinuses, which lasted several hours. The lawn really needs mowing and trimming. Not going to happen today though.
Well, actually I did get one thing done. My CPU fan is finally replaced (first replacement was defective...lasted about a week and I hope this one lasts as long as the original) and works much cooler now.

   / Good morning!!!! #34,473
RS, how many hours do you think you got out of the last set of new sprockets?
Dunno exactly, doesn't have an hour meter ... probably a few tho' ...

It's the first replacement set ... and the mochine is probably close to 30 years old.

Ya know, you started out as a little kid fiddling with chains on your bicycle, getting greasy... and here we still are...
LOL ... some things never change :D

Run the line if you've got the pipe ... way easier than feeding and messin' with the water buffalo in the long run.

Princess has been having fits over the fact that I haven't put any edges on the planting beds ... said we need one of those gas-powered edgers the landscapers use ... until I told her what they cost ... lol ...

Understand ... good to hear from ya.

How did your splitter turn out?
Turned out pretty decent ...

Still need to weld a couple of little mounting tabs on the heat shield for the muffler tho' ... and paint it.

Unfortunately I haven't been anywhere near as industrious as Thomas has, as far as splitting wood. I really need to get on that ... preferably before the snow flies again ... :D

You ever do anything as far as a log lift for yours ?

Yes, please work on the firewood; I don't think I can sweat out another malfunctioning furnace winter saga. What ever happened with the furnace?

LOL ... me either.

What ever happened with the furnace?
Nothing yet ... AC is workin' good tho' (knock on wood)

I did clean out the flue pipe on the WBF last week ... couldn't believe how much creosote was in it ... will probably have to do that about 1x per month over the heating season.

Another hot and humid day here still very dry. Worked with mini ex yesterday bone dry two feet down into the ground.

Wood boring bees terrible around here as well as plain ole bees nests everywhere. Lots of snakes too mostly black and pretty good size one that appeared to be six foot long at least. Mind you I'm not going to hold him to find out exactly. Finished work yesterday at 7:30 back at it today after lunch. June is going to be a busy month

Work in yard slowed way down grass has stopped growing wife watering flowers. Tractor I don't even know if it's still there

Lots of talented people on here enjoy reading you alls trials and tribulations and solutions to same

Mowed for 3 hours yesterday and feel like I could have planted a garden in my eyes and throat from all the dust that landed there.

Exactly! By the time I was done my three hours on the JD, and then weedwacked for an hour, I had to drop my clothes off at the garage door. It's when you make the turn against the wind and everything you just mowed comes back in your face.
Even wearing glasses I have to shut my eyes for a second or two.

boy is the cab in the Kubota nice...but it won't mow my lawn.

   / Good morning!!!! #34,479
After I got the belt changed on the x300 JD riding mower the management wanted a lesson in how to run it. Appears she has never mowed a lawn in our 38 years together. This must change. She also claims to want to learn how everything on the 5045E works in case she needs it when I'm not around. This should be interesting. Of course she drove a standard shift 60 passenger school bus for years over Vermont back roads so it is well within her capabilities.

63F going to 87F later, under partly cloudy skies with wind picking up in the afternoon as a low pressure system starts coming in off the Pacific.

RS, I'd forgotten about my other Stihl buggaboo: No access to repair or maintenance documentation. Clearly it's Stihl's intent to keep all that work in the dealer's hands. My dealer was kind enough to provide me with print outs of the carb, which I used to find my assembly error, and the prints came without asking when he plunked the parts on the counter. But there's nothing available to download from Stihl's web site other than owner's manuals, and they only cover things like replacing recoil starter cords, spark plugs, and cleaning air filters. BMW and a lot of other auto firms just lost a big lawsuit for trying to do the same thing, so maybe the situation will improve. Also have noticed the amount of trash generated here is a lot less now that the work is done on the house. I've already down sized the trash can, saving a whopping $6 every two months on the trash service fee. Even though I recycle containers, many of the recyclers out here no longer accept plastic unless it's subject to CRV (bottle deposit). It seems that the recycle waste streams are full to overflowing, and it's not being used in products fast enough to keep up with what's available.

Clever use of the old slate, Eric, but I wonder how you'll deal with leaves and other litter when it gets mixed in. A blower works well on other materials, but I imagine that it would scatter the slate chips. Even if the pictures do survive on the camera chip, sometimes I've found I didn't take just the one needed, and have to fall back on notes taken during the disassembly. Sometimes I even make sketches, usually when a dimension is involved. As far as greasy fingers go, I go through a lot of paper towels, and use the "old" camera for garage work. Turns out it's easier to use anyway, and a few greasy fingerprints hardly show among all the other scratches and dents. My biggest problem is remembering how things came apart, even if it's just overnight!

Drew, you've been standing up dominoes long enough for your shop, and it's time you tipped one over and enjoyed the fruits of your labor. If you do rent a trencher, make sure it's one that has provision for moving the dirt away from the trench. The last two I got just let it fall back into the trench, leaving me with hours of back breaking shovel work. I also found it difficult to resist digging the trench too deep, making even more work for myself.

Kev, that's some beautiful wood on the new cart. Be lovely to see pictures of it with you two being pulled around the farm in it. ;)

Roy, hope you feel better today. Advil Cold'n'Sinus works great for me when my head starts hammering. But I can only buy two boxes at a time because tweakers abuse the pseudoefedrin it contains. Even then, it takes a driver's license and signature.

Thought I'd finished the welding on the RTV tailgate yesterday and even had the pressure washer all set to clean it up for painting when I noticed the hole in the middle I was gonna cover with some plate. That's when the welder decided that the wire drive wheel was too worn, and I had to scramble around to remember where I kept the spares. Found them, for a change, in the welding drawer, so was able to cut up a piece of scrap and patch it into something big enough to cover most of the gate. At about that time I noticed that the battery was sitting crooked in its holder, and found that one of the hold down rods had corroded far enough that the hook at the end had straightened. And while doing that, I noticed an orange knob at the end of a cable stashed way up under the seat. Turns out it allows a lock to be engaged on the differential lever, which I'd just been holding down with the heel of my boot. Sure wish the tractor had one of those! Found where it was supposed to mount, and got it reinstalled, then verified that it actually works. So two dragon eggs in one afternoon, but only one bad one that can be worked around with a bungee cord until the part comes in at the Kubota dealer. Then back to welding the patch on the tailgate, which I was almost able to complete. Got it run all the way around, but on cleaning it up with the angle grinder found a few places that were a little low and could use some more weld. But by then it was late, and I was hot and hungry, so that's where I'll start in again this morning.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone!
