No chores planned and no need to go anywhere, and that's exactly what I'm going to do

Pretty good snowstorm coming through tomorrow evening through Monday. Tractor's fueled, plugged in (not into the wall outlet though) and ready to go...

Think I'll give this a try today:
Don't have any limes, or juice...have to make do.
Drambuie is a bit sweet for my tastes, but the ginger beer should tart it right up

Good morning, low temp -22 and the high will be -8°F. Wind NNE 8 mph. Sunny.
The DIL asked me yesterday why they put up the extreme cold warnings, when people know full well that it gets cold in the winter. This IS Northern Ontario. I told her that the warnings were mostly for the immigrants that come from warm countries where they never see snow except for pictures. (She is an immigrant herself, having come here 18 years ago from jolly olde England.)

There is nothing I am doing outside today, come to think of it there is nothing inside I am doing today.

Energy conservation day.

That's a real good point, David. I have all those old versions on the drive, too, but your post reminds me I can't access them because those old versions of TT probably won't run on the installed version of MacOS. I suppose what I should have been doing all along is to use the print dialog to create a PDF version of the finished tax forms. As it is, all I'll have is the paper copies I always print. 🤬

Wng, Buffet's candies is a favorite 'go-to' place for sweets. I haven't had any of the piñon candy..... piñon stuff is really good-- or -- really bad! I definitely do not like piñon coffee.... just not strong enough.

The candy came yesterday...very very good! How do you type the tilde over the n? I just typed it with the y and knew you'd know what I meant. We also got an order of Mike's Jerky from ABQ...Green Chile, Santa Fe and Christmas flavors.

I always save a TT version of the files and PDF versions, and print them. I move the electronic files to a thumb drive. I deleted all the old versions of TT except most recent after testing opening old files with it. I needed the HD space. Hopefully you won't need the old tax forms anyway.

Our outside decorations finally dried of melting snow, so we took them down yesterday...it was so windy it blew my fiberglass step ladder over while I was moving storage boxes. Also, split the load of firewood and stacked it on a pallet...then had a real tasty lunch my wife fixed...green chile burger and oven fries...then took a Perry Mason rest period.

Good Morning.
It’s 9 and supposed to double that today.

Yesterday’s trip to Hilton ahead went well, but it was only in the 50’s there. Still managed to take up the whole day. Traffic was awful driving home from the airport, but that’s to be expected for 4:30 on a Friday afternoon in Philadelphia.

Today is the final episode of the trilogy, with a trip to Stuart, FL. Hopefully another uneventful day. This client has an uncanny sense of when to head south, almost always the coldest day of the year.

I’ve got a few chores planned for tomorrow and next week, but will have to collect some supplies first. We’ll see if Amazon makes good on their delivery times for some of the stuff.

wow some mighty cold temps this morning. 11 here, that's plenty cold, going up to 26 in fair weather today.
9 degrees tomorrow morning, balmy for Bill but the deep freeze for here.

Wingsprd, glad you weren't on that ladder when it went over. Green chile burger sounds good.
Don, was wondering how your gardens were doing after that big freeze. Did they ever consider making removable covers
for the gardens?
Seed catalogs are coming in and thoughts turn to warmer weather.

I need to go foodshopping but might wait until this afternoon when it warms up a bit. An 11 degree car is not much fun to sit in...

how long do you all let your car warm up before driving off in really cold weather?
I can't let it sit too long in detached unheated garage or I'd get asphyxiated.
So I back up slowly and let it run for a minute or two in driveway. Usually fiddling with some heat control, making sure
seat and steering wheel warmers are on. But it's half way to town before they get very warm if it's this cold out like now.
Car does not have remote start but inside a garage I couldn't use it anyway.

I think I would wait a little longer for diesel than gas. I use only synthetic oil so less concern about lube.

there's nothing like the clatter of a very cold diesel in the barn.

Yesterday was windy enough that I spent most of it futzing around in the office.

That east coast storm starting Sunday night looks like bad mojo. How many is that this winter, now?

Not like I've ever forgotten my wallet, Ted. The last time, I was 600 miles from home on the first day of a cross country trip, and had no way of buying more fuel. Did the signature card thing at a local branch of my bank, fueled up, and went back home. Wallet was sitting on the headboard of my bed, right where I left it. One of the hazards of getting an early start, when you're not really awake.

The Big Sur version of MacOS comes with a keyboard viewer app, but it doesn't seem to speak Spanish either, Billy.🤷🏼

Still no luck chasing down that sprocket for the chain saw. Lots of places list it for sale on their web site, but none have it in stock. So that puts delivery at least into the middle of February, when the Makita guy said they'd have it back in stock at their national supply center.

At the end of the day I donned a very bright headlamp and crawled around under the truck looking for a brake fluid leak. Of the four wheel calipers, the last one I checked, driver side rear, was wet, with a shadow on the driveway where more fluid had evaporated. Eureka! Finally, a smoking gun! Checked with the Ford dealer for caliper rebuild kits, and not only do they not sell kits, Ford doesn't even sell the calipers. All he could do was offer me no name remanufactured ones at twice the price of what I found at Rock Auto. I guess model year 2000 is now officially "no longer supported". And even though the master cylinder reservoir was full just before I left town to head home, it was pretty much empty when I checked it yesterday. So I think the master cylinder is OK. I ordered a new pair of calipers for the rear axle. Hope FedEx doesn't lose this one, too. Still no sign of the first one, either.

I learned earlier this week that my friend's sister lost her battle with pancreatic cancer on Tuesday night. She passed peacefully in her sleep. Cancer sucks; she was only 67 and didn't look a day over 50. Hard blow for my friend and especially her sister's husband, but at least she's no longer suffering. And life goes on. Looks like I might be headed down there for a long weekend to offer some moral support. It doesn't hurt that part of the route runs down the coast on Highway 1, and the only reliable vehicles I have right now just happen to be motorcycles.👍🏻

Overnight low 40F is to be high today. Yesterday I addressed horse water for the next few days. Hopefully the jet stream will stay north enough to keep us on the rainy side the winter storm since I will be driving at 3pm and midnight today and tomorrow due to wife's schedule.

My sinus infection from hades is much improved. Blood thinners and bad sinus infections is a new ballgame for me.

speaking of car parts, my Genesis has a smelly exhaust and I'm sure it's the catalytic converter brand used.
I noticed the smell yesterday while idling outside, that smell has been around a long time, I usually connect it to Japanese cars.

some of you could probably tell what motor it was from the smell. Smell of a flat head Ford. Or a VW aircooled. Or an old MB diesel.
I could tell the difference in all my tractors, each had a little different diesel smell. Except the Farmall Super A. It burned both gas and oil...
funny, it was made to run just clapped out, worn to death, but it would keep going. Try that on a modern tractor with a dash full of IC's.
Lou, Gale, many of you have old iron and can appreciate this.

all said and done, I'd rather be in a cab breathing through a HEPA filter and not sucking up airborne farm chemicals. Except in the woods.
But then one should have a separate woods tractor anyway...(y)

Keep in mind that when the saw starts stalling because of varying chain tension, you can pop the circlip off that holds the star in pace and flip the star over and keep using it. At least that was the case with my saw. Most of what I have left to do is larger stuff for which I really should be using a larger gas saw, but that little battery jobbie has got me spoiled.

I don't know what a floating rim is, but the part has six points, and the spaces between alternating pairs of them on each side are closed in with a thin web so that the drivers are somewhat captured. Pretty complicated geometry, and wouldn't be surprised if it was a sintered powdered metal part. That would also explain why the drivers were able to score it so badly in the relatively short time I've been using it. To give you some idea of the amount of use, I have five chains that size, and I don't think I've managed to dull all five of them yet. I plan on ordering three of those sprockets as spares. I also noticed that the sprockets are available in both 1/4" and 3/8" pitch, so if you like the micro chain, you could convert over to it.

how long do you all let your car warm up before driving off in really cold weather?
I park my truck outside. Warm up is normally 5-10 minutes...long enough to scrape any ice off the windshield
You didn't ask, but I normally run the tractor at high idle (1500 RPM) for 15-20 minutes in weather like this. I prefer not to engage the PTO until it's warmed up

I guess that's why there was a core charge on the calipers. About thirty-five bux for the calipers, and about the same for the core. Only worth while returning them if they'll fit in one of those smaller "If It Fits, It Ships" boxes the USPS sells.

Then again, I could have gone with super fancy racing calipers, at almost ten times the price. But then pads that FedEx has lost wouldn't have fit. That's my excuse, and I'm stickin' with it... 😄

All depends...long enough to remove frost or ice but if passenger Mrs. good 15-20 mins since seat not heated,pickup doesn't have those fancy extras like heated seat steering wheel mirrors remember driver seating etc. pickup still has roll up windows...wish it wing windows.
