48°F and clear skies this morning, going up to 78° today. Still no rain at all in our forecast.

Wifey and I teamed up on the grass cutting Saturday after both of us went separate directions running errands in the morning. She was on the zeroturn around the house, and I was on the rider out in the pasture. Got it all done in about 2-1/2 hours, minus the trimming.

My plans for finishing the trimming on Sunday took a back seat to other stuff. I started cutting down a couple of the troublesome peach trees while The Wife rearranged the chicken coop run ... which, of course, turned into both of us rearranging the run. We got that done late-afternoon, and I finished cutting down a third scrawny ash tree by the driveway while she ran off to the store. Between driving all those fence posts and dropping and cutting up three trees, my hands and forearms were sore and cramping when we were eating dinner. Still pretty sore all over today, but we got a lot done.



The Lynxx 40v saw made it through two trees before starting to lose power. As I was cutting through the thicker sections of the trunk on the second tree, it would stop after about 10 seconds. The battery showed it was down to two bars. So, I swapped it out with the one from the pole saw to take down the third tree. I can hardly complain about that from a battery powered saw.

Eric, I watched a YouTube video of a guy who mows his own property and hires himself out to a couple neighbors to scythe their small fields. He said his three acre field takes him about 10 days to cut. He goes out in the morning and cuts for about 2-1/2 hours, then moves on to other chores. By the time he gets to the end of the field, it's time to start back at the beginning again. It's amazing to see how effortless skilled mowers make that process look. He also demonstrated the peening technique for sharpening, with a specialty hammer and a small peening anvil. Pretty neat stuff. He also said he gets his scythes from a place near him in Maine USA, who get all their blades from a family in Europe who've been making scythe blades for over 500 years. The company in Maine (Scythe Supply) makes the rest of the assembly to custom fit each customer.

It's been getting cool here, too, Chris. We were down to 42° both mornings this weekend. Some farmers near us have already started taking out their corn. Some of the bean fields are starting to turn as well.

We have one of those Amazon devices, RNG. My Wife loves it, it's like a personal secretary for her. Me? I usually hit the mute button every time I pass by it. I don't like those things at all.
And, you already know I'm no fan of HughesNet, which we still seem stuck with as well.

Good morning all. Two more days of dry weather to come with a high of 21C/70F, after that the rain will be here to give me a break from brick work :dance1:

Catching up on here, I read a few posts about large European churches. We live on the outskirts of a small town - Whitchurch, Shropshire - and with a name like that, it is not surprising that the skyline is dominated by a church tower. St Alkmunds is not as big as some, but is still a very impressive building. This "latest" Whitchurch church one was built way back in 1712, after the earlier one had collapsed. That does not imply any shoddy workmanship, as the original had been giving service since the year 912.

I regularly use the church as an aiming mark, though not for shooting! The route of the footpath that crosses several of our fields is not obvious where it passes over the undulating landscape, so if I am out topping, I will cut a path to guide new walkers, the very top of the church tower showing me which way to steer the Iseki. Of course this is no coincidence, as the original purpose of many footpaths is as a direct route to church.

well my day sure improved. My good friend with the truck and trailer now says his son wants to trade his dump trailer in for a 7x16 new covered trailer and pulling it with his nice Chevy Duramax 3/4 ton, could they come down and move my stuff for me? Oh my....what a genuinely nice thing of them to do. And my friend will baby my car while his son drives the truck and trailer.
I can wait a couple more days for them so they can come down on a Sat, the 10th and go home on Sunday and not lose time from their family business.
I'll still pay them but we sure get by with a little help from our friends...

Well, the hummingbird feeders are in, no birds for about two weeks and they were straggler females. Got the trash out. Emptied the birdbath and took the bowl off, won’t freeze for a while but the birds weren’t using it anyway. 49 and cloudy early, sunny and 67° later.
My grass has really slowed, I was mowing at 5 days through about the 10th, now after a week and it will be 2-3 days before it needs it. It’s very thick and green but definitely slower growing.

Slow to get moving today ... went to bed a little before 23:00, woke up at 07:30 to tilt the lizard ... stayed up for a few minutes and then decided to go back to bed. Woke up @ 11:30 and got up ... guess I was tired from yesterday ... :confused3:

Lots of bird activity on feeders right now ... must be needing a boost for the chill temps.

Potential good news on flicker nest box: the ground around it was littered with pine shavings yesterday ... so someone has been checking it out ... although I noticed a lot of smaller birds around it this morning, so maybe they are looking to turn it into a roost box.

Got WB refilled yesterday morning, watered Gingko tree, two smaller oaks, upper catch basin new grass, upper lilac bush, one azalea, and a small oak tree that's growing in one of the planting holes I still need to prepare. I had observers:

Hauled screened soil down and got three large planting holes in northeast planting bed fully prepared with soil, peat moss, and soil sulphur. One still to go, need to transplant small oak before I can prep it.

Also used screened soil to build up three water retention dams around Gingko tree, and the two smaller oaks.

Finished clean up along west edge of driveway down to pole barn and incorporated debris into compost pile. Also pulled up another two rebar stakes ... still have one more to do.

Hauled multiple bucket loads of mulch down and spread out in northeast planting bed.

The deer are really liking the slot I have cut into the mulch pile ... I think there are seven total - five fawns, two does.

Chased them out there several times when I went up to get mulch. The fawns were all frolicking around and playing King of The Hill under the watchful gaze of the two does ... :laughing:

Out for an evening stroll and dinner:

They seem quite curious ...

Good morning , 41 going to 65 -sunny and abnormally cold . No rain forecast until next week. Seems like August rain and November cold

Went after the oak stump again-looks like a big tap root, so maybe a grind, burn, bury, don;t have time to keep at it. Got another Stump I had missed out though.
Took down the dying Norway spruce after changing my bar from 18" to 20", pulled great. Cleanup through the chipper and more trail cover in piles for me to spread.
Back is killing me but only muscle pain..

Seems like it's getting time to direct the water around the solar heater since it's getting so cold out.

Chuck-had a mystery switch in my old house-ends up was a builder spare in case you order the ceiling lights - probably a box up there somewhere for the new owners to find.
BEF - we have a cell booster too-doesn't help much and did not want to invest in any other ones as not cheap to do it right-mine was free from Tmobile-
Drew - good to hear you found a ride up north!

Used to use a scythe when I was a kid to get around the barn without taking out the blackberry bushes. They worked well and our neighbor used to sharpen it. Never saw how he did it. Not a large area, but pretty quick to do it,as long as not tangled up in the blackberries.

This little guy smashed into our window waking us up-took her most of the day to recover, but finally took off-

The black cherry trees are dropping leaves like crazy. I decided to mow the back field after I did, I couldn’t quit so I burnt the afternoon mowing, oh and knocking off my left taillight for the second time this year. Tree limbs keep jumping in front of me. I think I will move them inboard on the ROPS, I just need hole for the wires and I have multiple drills.

Mongoose? I haven’t seen you post a picture of one.

Not particularly friendly, lot of folks consider them somewhat nasty, especially around chickens. Haven’t seen any close to house in ages, 1 near tractorshed a couple years ago. Sometimes see when I mow and most anytime driving down the road. They tend to hurry outa sight, so a challenge for a pic.

My Tempest weather station is under-reporting the rainfall. Today my in ground rain gauge said 1.5" and the weather station said it rained for 302 minutes and .22". I have an email to the company asking for help in adjusting the sensitivity setting for the rain. The jury is still out if this is a :thumbsup: or :thumbdown:.

57F and clear @ 21:00, headed down to a low of 42F overnight. Currently no significant chance of rain until next Sunday.

Just finished a big bowl of chili The Woman cooked up earlier today ... :thumbsup:

Neighbor was out cutting his pasture when I went to take the trash up to the road, going for the season's last cutting of hay apparently.

Screened some more compost. Even managed to sneak a bucket load from over by the yellow jacket nest without getting stung.

Burned the grass and weeds off from around 12 planting holes up along the driveway and the shop. These will mostly be for oak trees, although two (of three) by shop may get rhododendrons if I still have some left. Filled in 5 holes with screened compost that hadn't already been filled, still have the 3 next to shop to fill. Took 3 buckets worth.

Watered some of the hosta in the northeast planting bed, emptied Water Buffalo so it will need refilled.

Hauled down another 5 bucket loads of mulch to the northeast planting bed, got about 75% of it spread. Noticed all these footprints all over the the mulch I had already spread ...

Brought hummingbird feeder in when I came inside tonight, haven't seen any in better than a week.

Mowing definitely on the agenda for tomorrow, before I lose my mower ...
