Good Morning Everyone.

Well the bear marauder showed up a couple of times last night knocking around the empty 55G galvanized ashcans. Bonehead Brogen disturbed by all the racket moved from sleeping in the kitchen and closest to the action woke up and moved to a quieter spot in the house. The bear is a little guy smaller than Brogen about the size of the ashcans he was knocking around.. Probably a yearling male driven from Momma bear and her new cubs. I tried to get a picture, but "he" ran away. Later I was awoken to any angry/scared bear "squealing"(?). Apparently he came back and got himself stuck in one of the cans and was not happy. I saw him getting himself out of his predicament. I haven't got a picture yet.

A breezy, clear 40コF start to the morning. I got my first tick of the season on Walk #1 and now with my body's neuropathic burning, itching, pins and needles my body is on "full tick alert" mode = I am tick infested. It takes a while for my "head" to convince the "body" that I am w/o ticks at least for the moment. Today will be a great day for the dump run and yard work.

Ron- Thanks for the bird ID. That cold weather front rolled through last night as predicted. The wind/rain knocked out satellite reception for a while and then it passed on through. No big deal here.

Drew- Thanks for the doll. :)

Dave- Your pool pictures are really  to see. I bet it is a "little different" on the experiential side. I hope that you and Sophie have electricity and are still safe.

A colleague of mine was sitting on the throne in a 2 story composting outhouse in CR when a strong earthquake hit. The building was swaying and all he could visualize was falling into the sawdust below:eek:

Randy- I agree with you about wildlife "experts" another opinions of the area wildlife. Years ago snowshoeing around here I saw some interesting rather large cat tracks. I started to follow the tracks until it seemed like who was tracking who and made a rather hasty trek back to the truck. Those tracks were far larger than a feral cat or bobcat.

I hope that everyone has a manageable day today.

My + thoughts, wishes, and prayers for all.

Well, continued to not be able to bear weight on the knee again this morning, still swollen. Went for Dr's appt today. Had to stop 3 times while walking across the giant parking lot. They took a few X-rays, then the doc manipulated the knee/leg inflicting more pain. He said: it's really swollen, I said no-duh! He said he was going to aspirate the fluid out....I know what that entails... I won't go into great detail, but it involved using a very large needle. He took out 60+CC's of bloody fluid. Hurt like h**l even w/ lidocaine for numbing. He also injected some cortisone. Now back on rest, elevation, and ice. No PT next week, follow up in 10 days. Oh well. He said this sometimes occurs, if it doesn't get better in a week, we'll discuss then.

Don and Kyle, I wish we had wild berries like you guys. It's way to dry here, even the weeds won't grow! Do you guys ever pick, containerize, and freeze for a later date? Sure would make a nice winter treat!

Sorry about your knee. I've seen those large syringes and they scare the h___ out of me. Hope it gets better soon.

I am looking into Jelly recipes right now. I don't have a specific "canner", but maybe I can make do. They all call for lots of sugar, so I don't know what options Don has other than freezing them (which works out quite well).

Morning all.

Woke up hr late, had alarm set for mon-fri mode.

I used costco weed block last yr, weeds enjoyed it, they grew well under it.

Looks like rain to the north.

I had the same problem when I used landscape fabric. Some use hay, but I don't want to add it to my garden just yet.

We got about 5/8" rain, but I had just tilled the garden and it all soaked in just perfect. Now if I can just keep the pests out.

It's a nice sunny 36* this morning, yesterday was in the high 60's and sunny. It looks like it's going to be in the low 70's with sunny skies and a little wind.

I did get some work done on the fence yesterday. I'll have a look at the rest of it today.

Hope everyone has a nice start to the weekend.

Good morning to all! About 45 this morning going up to around 70. Slight breeze only for a change.

Well, I think I only woke up 1 time last night... Not sure if from lack of pain or from exhaustion...either way it was good. Just a little bit of swelling this morning. Minimal pain, actually less than expected. Maybe "turning the corner" on this. I hope. Just going to take it easy.

I can hear the tractor calling from the shed... Wants the wiring completed for the auxiliary lights...just needs a couple disconnect plugs soldered on....maybe I can try for a little bit...

Hope everyone has a great day! Prayers sent!

Boy, what a beautiful day! Just about 70 right now.

Pretty severe storm around 2200 last night, according to my wife (I slept through it). Anyway, no internet connection for most of the day.
Mowed the grass and a number of other outdoor chores done. We lost the tops of a couple smaller trees (about 6-7 inch trunks). I cut them to length I could easily handle and will chip them with the Woodmaxx chipper when it comes in (week of 14 May)
I also tried to start my new genny. Looks like the seller neglected to include to ground cable for the battery, no electric start and pulling on the get the recoil starter didn't work either. I used gas I had for the walk behind snow blower and I don't think it's too old (a month or three), but maybe it's bad. I got tired of yanking on it...I'll mess around with it more on Sunday.

Altogether, a good day and I hope all of you had as good a day. A day without the internet is not a bad day!

According to the news, it got pretty breezy around Toronto yesterday.
Roof blew off a school, shingles missing from houses. Trees down, hydro poles too. 190,000 customers with out power.
3 1//2 hours north and it was a great day, rainy, but still a great day. No high winds.

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day. The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.

Good evening all. 56F for the start and a bit breezy, mostly clear sky. Sky remained clear, wind was bisk at non but fell off during afternoon high temp of 81F. Slow start, did make breakfast for us. Tried to prep for tourny this afternoon, neglected to check GPS batteries so did not have the distance to info we are used to having.Had a nice couple to play with.
Prayers for all.

Lots of sun this morning, too hot to be out in the yard with hammer and chisel ( well, that's my excuse), instead there are plenty of jobs to do in the shade.

Our Grillo mower has been reluctant to start recently, only this time it is probably not another safety interlock contact as there is a good "clack" as the starter relay closes, yet no sound from the starter motor and the battery voltage hardly dips. I shorted the relay and it started ok, so likely to be the relay contacts. Tried to get it out late yesterday afternoon and got frustrated by the Italian design - great styling, but as I've discovered before, only intended for someone with smaller hands than me to work on.

Most people don't know that ...
:)

Did you realise that comprising mostly of fat, the density of mayonnaise is almost identical to that of an iceberg ? Unlike rick's tale, "Fatbergs" really do lurk beneath the surface. I don't know of any that have sunk famous ships, though this monster one caused a lot of trouble last year - maybe you should finish breakfast before watching this

woke to happily greet the sound of rain on the roof, a gentle rain this morning, .11 so far and expect about an inch. Just perfect for the crops.
I've been looking forward to today for a quieter inside day.

David, are you getting any smoke or smell?

Going to pull out my new food vacuum bagger today and bag my first batch of snow peas. I'm not blanching them, seems to be a lot of different opinions on that, any suggestions for those who have experience freezing vegetables? The last time I froze blueberries they came out as dehydrated chewy things, not exactly what I want from the peas.

May your day be peaceful.

   / Good morning!!!! #75,595
well maybe I should blanche...

To end the ripening process and to avoid release of gases in the package, veggies should be blanched quickly for about 4 minutes in boiling water. By doing so, the ripening process will stop and the germs will be killed. Also, short timing will keep intact the original rigidity of vegetables. Soon after blanching, put them in a bowl of ice water. This action will stop the cooking process taking place in the vegetables.

snow peas cook so quickly my guess is about one minute boiling should be plenty.

Good morning all, 52 this morning going to 67 with a 40%--- 70% chance of showers, less than 1/4" expected. Plan to take it easy today, will see.

Drew, we heard of not blanching several veg and tried it when I was young but it was never pleasing to eat. Never tried it on snow peas.

Prayers for those in need, have a great day. Ed

56 going to 76...no rain here until maybe late. Need it.

Rick, I got a good laugh at your story.

Our well water is very good, but on rare occasion some silt and tiny sand will make its way into the house...it used to be after only the most enormous rain of the year, but I fixed that problem. Now it seems it has only occurred twice in many years, each time after a power outage, which we had a couple of days ago. It doesn't happen after most power outages, but it did yesterday...clay silt clogged the screen/aerator in the kitchen sink, and the washing machine...so spent a couple of hours taking the screens off every sink and shower, both hoses on the washer, and washed and scrubbed with vinegar for good measure. It only affected the cold water line, but I'm sure the bottom of the hot water tank had some sediment. I'll drain it soon. Think I need a whole house filter?

Drinking first cup of coffee. 50° with clear skies this morning. Heading to 71° with rain. Yesterday was very nice. When the lawn was done I called it a day. Apple watch says I did over 12k steps. No aches or pains this morning. Going to work on the 2 largest parts of paver leveling project. Will see how far I get before rain moves in. Then some rib smoking/grilling and a little NASCAR in afternoon.

Prayers for those in need.

Good Morning All.

Reminds me that it's time to drain water heater and change whole house filters. After 3 months filters are a nasty black. And smell terrible. We are on a well for water. Water out of tap does test good and has no smell.
