Good Morning.
Spitting rain/snow outside, not pleasant or there.
Here is what the Davis weather station has to report-
Yesterday was another day proving the Ferris Bueller quote “life comes at you fast”.
It started in the shop getting a speaker ready for pick up, it’s new owner was on his way from Washington, DC, about a 3 hour drive. Noticed that it was getting cold, and that the heater wasn’t running. Digital thermostat was blank. That system has a fairly complex control system, the thermostat is connected to the furnace with only two wires for power, all of the control functions are by “Red Link” RF communication to an interface on the furnace. Also connected wirelessly are indoor and outdoor remote sensors and internet gateway.
In the process of sorting it out, I got a shock from a “low voltage” wire that was at least line voltage measured by my calibrated fingers.
Considerably more investigation revealed that a 24volt wire chafed against a 240 wire and rubbed through the insulation connecting them together, basically frying all of the connected 24vac devices, thermostat, interface module, defrost controller, and contactor.
Keep in mind that my customer is on his way to pick up his speaker that still needed my attention, so I fired up the propane furnace with test leads with alligator clips. Upstairs was comfy the whole time, as the Mitsubishi was unaffected.
Speaker was ready when it’s new owner arrived, he was ecstatic with it.
Got back to the HVAC project, got new thermostat, interface module and defrost control all installed and programmed. So now I have heat controlled by a thermostat. Still have to replace the contactor in the condensing unit before I have the heat pump back on line, I’ll wait for the precipitation to relent before I attack that.
Got everything buttoned up in time to throw some meatballs in the crockpot for the band at 7. Had a good night of playing music.
Today will start with speakers, and hopefully get the heat pump back on line if tbd weather cooperates.
Need to walk down the lane and see how my drainage work is flowing.
