Jim Shooz, do any of the local critters like macadamias, like our squirrels like walnuts?
Do you have to trim them or do annual maintenance?
You could package a bunch of nuts off 50 trees. Bet they taste good being that fresh.

a wave of liquid gold Buppies, very cool pic.

32° right now...bit chilly for late April. High in the mid-50's today and mostly sunny.

Dump run and a trip to the local Deere dealer to get those snow blower hoses (I'd described in a post yesterday) evaluated. Most likely, they can just replace the broken fittings, but we shall see.
After that, to Randolph for a way overdue haircut...Not sure about tasks after that. I do need to get the snowblower back on the blocks, but I'm pretty sure I won't be able to get the QH on the lower pins. Probably have to rig a chain, lift the end and chuck it up somehow so I can pick it up with the QH.
Still too early to mow...but it's time to rearrange the garage for summer use...so, that might be on the agenda today

Regarding the coral snakes in the potato patch, will moth balls liberally scattered under the plants help to keep them away?
These are organic gardens, moth balls are not allowed, they would poison the potatoes. (Mothballs are commonly made of naphthalene or para-dichlorobenzene, both of which are toxic to humans.). Of course coral snake poison is worse but avoidable.
I determined the potatoe's vegetation was so thick that weeds were not growing under them, no weeding needed, yeah! About half have bloomed so harvest is in 4 to 5 weeks. (100 days after planting). They looked perfect so I have the irrigation is set just right, 15 minutes of drip every 12 hours.

Good morning! 70˚F heading to the 80s, cloudy, very dry.

Good Morning!!!! 51F @ 5:30AM. Plentiful sunshine. High 77F. Winds NW at 10 to 15 mph.
No measurable rain in the last 24 hours, but I did see raindrops on the patio concrete yesterday morning early when I peaked out. Today's high will be 15F higher than yesterday, and tomorrow will reach into the low 80s. Then dropping back down into the mid to low 70s for the rest of the period, and again no rain in sight.

In the real estate markets I'm watching, Ted, there are far more million dollar plus homes coming on the market than there are priced less than that. Maybe today's 1200-1400 sq. ft. home can no longer be considered a "starter" home because they're selling in the $500K to $800K range. I'm keeping my eye still on Oregon, and in Santa Barbara County and Placer County here in California. I was going to start looking into Arizona, but that seems like it wouldn't offer any improvement with regard to the wildfire problem. Perhaps Utah could work, but haven't done much homework there yet.

The biggest issue I have with the solar power system, Kyle, is the brown outs that happen when things like the air conditioner compressor start. I've had to replace the power supplies in two laptop computers so far, several LED "bulbs", and even the UPS units that were supposed to protect the more sensitive electronics no longer seem to be doing so. The makers of the main system components tell me the system shouldn't be doing that, and have offered some suggestions that might help. But there are a raft of other issues, too, some just annoyances, others involving warranty periods and battery life. They've all been on the table and unresolved for several years now, so in a way it's good this case is underway and there will be some kind of closure in a couple of months.

When I looked for Merrill's mid height waterproof Moab boot, I couldn't find any of my size in stock, even from the multiple sellers on Amazon. So I'm going to try some from a maker called La Sportiva that are well rated and are available in wide sizes. We'll see. The folks at the store I'm dealing with have been very accommodating, covering shipping back and forth and providing the mailing labels. If this go round doesn't work out, maybe the Merrill's will be available again by then. Thanks for the Ecco Trak info, Buppies. Looks like we wear pretty close to the same size.

Found a site to download more of the Factory Service Manual for the Subaru engine that was used in the van conversion, and made some measurements on the connector going to the Engine Management Unit that seem to indicate it's not properly wired. While doing that, the van went into the fail-to-start mode again, and this time I was able to confirm that the injectors are definitely not firing when it happens. In the middle of the next test, the engine started running again, so the intermittent nature of the problem is once again making things difficult.

Got a phone call back from the court clerk late in the day, and she was very helpful and informative. There's a small chance I can get the case dismissed if I file a Declaration that points out the case was brought in the wrong county, but unless the judge reads it before the hearing, I'll still have to drive the three hours to attend.

Noticed that the side-by-side was almost out of fuel, so filled it up, and as long as the pump was out, brought the tractor up to fill it up, too. When I was done, it started a regeneration cycle on the way back to where I keep it parked, so I took it for a loop of the new road to check out the water damage along the way. The lower part had sections that saw some erosion, and others where rocks and dirt had been washed down on them, but nothing that can't be touched up with the FEL. That wasn't enough to let the regeneration finish, so I moved a couple more trees over to the burn pile and that's all it took. It'll be too windy to burn today, but the breeze will feel good while I'm working the chainsaw.

Hope everyone enjoys the weekend!

61F and "Fair" @ 09:00, headed up to a high of 81F for the supposedly, with abundant sunshine.

Made the run to Menards yesterday to pick up orders after filling up the hopper feeder, was about typical: they gave me a 7 lb. bag of striped sunflower seeds instead of the 16 lb. safflower seeds that I had ordered (which I failed to catch before departing) and tried to load me with a pallet of 10 bags of brown mulch ... rather the 20 bags of black mulch that I had ordered. Fortunately, I did catch that and got them to go get the correct mulch and load it ... although the doors would barely close once they had it on.

After I got back to the house I unloaded the small items which was mostly critter food and some cheap plastic pots in 6", 1 and 2 gallon sizes. Some of those will be used to hold a bunch of the typical orange day lilies we have growing along the walk in the planting bed outside the kitchen window ... until I can figure out where they are going to go.

After that I moved the trays with yellow crookneck and zucchini inside and tended the rest of the indoor plants. There are a couple of dahlias that are starting to poke up above the soil in their grow bags and the cucumber plants are at the point where they have outgrown the covers on the starter trays and will have to be repotted and probably moved outside at least for the next couple of days.

Also the eggplant seeds have sprouted and are starting to come up.

And winter squash are looking very good this morning:

Following that I mowed about the upper 1/3 of the front lawn. Will core the portion of the front that I didn't get to the other day this morning and probably finish up mowing the front late this afternoon in the heat.

Then I weeded around the peach tree over on the east side of the front lawn. It is looking good, with a good amount of new leaves on it. Still have some work to do there, as far as adding some screened compost and getting the bulbs planted.

After that I weeded the hosta bed behind the shop. Really wasn't too bad as far as the weeds go, so it went pretty quickly. Added some more screened compost to that bed, to try and level it. May do some more of that today and possibly mulch the bed as well.

Woman had thought that the deer had picked that bed clean too. Not so, apparently it just takes longer for the soil to warm and hosta to come up as the bed is always in shade. Hosta coming up around the big maple up there as well.

On the way back down to the house I saw a bluebird fly out of Nest Box No. 2 so I went inside and got out the mealworms in the 'frig and dug out 16 and put them in an empty cat food can and put those in the feeder out out front. Will check today and refill if they have emptied it.

Need to get the last three strawberry planted and get the rest of the strawberries and asparagus moved out of the kitchen and around back ... which may require putting Squeak in jail for a while so I don't have to contend with her trying to escape while I'm going in and out.

Hope everyone has an enjoyable, productive, and safe Saturday ... (y)
