76 years ago at daybreak, my 19 year old dad jumped off a shot up wooden LCM, into water over his head, wearing 70 lbs of gear. He had a tall buddy help him to shallow water, where all they had to worry about was withering **** fire, stepping over the body parts and hoping his next step wasn’t on a land mine.
Eleven months later the Nazis surrendered because the greatest fighting force in history had just totally kicked their butts across Europe. Farm boys like dad, rich people, movie stars, formed into the most feared Army/Navy and USMC and saved the world.
THEY WERE 19 YEAR OLD KIDS, think about that as you go about your day.

71 and foggy after getting three rounds of t-storms last night. We got 1.25, too, Buppies. Getting back into 90s today.

Thomas, didn't know it was the strawberry moon, but it looked that way just before it set early this morning, before the fog rolled in. Peanut may be jealous.

Mostly, your fishing sounds like fun.

BEF, I think your bird is a brown thrasher. We have a pair nesting here.

Ron, crazy long neck when stretched out.

Jay, nice feeder set up.

Been watching a young black snake at out back door area this morning. Carolina wrens built a nest in my hardhat hanging in the shed yesterday. I'll leave it since I only wear it when using chainsaw or picking up a load of gravel at the quarry, which I'm not planning anytime soon.

Changed the oil in my truck yesterday. Only put on 5K miles since October, a new record low due to the covids. I use synthetic Mobil 1 oil but still can't go past about 5K before I get antsy. Then roasted a Gesha type of coffee for the first time...a little more expensive, so will be interested to see if worth it.

I would say that it wouldn't happen again with the kids of today,
But it did happen on a smaller scale in the 60's-early 70's even with the controversy and media hype of that time,
then again when Irag and Iran our young people stepped up to the plate.
So there are still young people willing to be the back bone of our forces, fortunately for us.

Good Morning!!!! 55F @ 5:30AM. Sunshine and clouds mixed. High around 80F. Winds S at 10 to 20 mph.

Our CoVid-19 count seems to be rising by about five a week, I think largely due to increased testing, as there are only three in the hospital and no additional deaths. Fingers crossed it stays that way as more restrictions are lifted, and more people turn up for mass demonstrations.

FWIW, Drew, after my mom had her first stroke, she was given both physical and occupational therapy. The physical therapy was to help her regain motion and strength, the occupational was to help her find different ways of dressing and caring for herself in spite of her paralysis. Once she had progressed to the point where she was no longer improving, she was discharged from the rehab facility and placed in long term care, what most people call a nursing home. She was able to return home only after her boyfriend showed he was able to care for her needs and that things like stairs and bathing wouldn't be a problem. And that a variety of in home care services had been arranged. Dad, on the other hand, had much much more paralysis, never recovered much, and never returned home, ending his days in a nursing home. But both of them went through the same living situation transitions, and evaluations in between, and I suspect that's going to be the case with you as well. :2cents:

I wonder how much longer young men and women will step up to become police officers with all this "defund the police" talk going on. Anarchy seems just around the corner, Lou.

The new shed looks like it's been there all along, Ted.

Your father was part of the Greatest Generation, Randy, and they don't quite make 'em like that anymore. None of us would be here without them.

I've only had nectar go bad once, RS, and it took nearly a month. These days, I'm lucky of a jug of the stuff lasts three days, and right now, the little buggers are swarming the feeder outside the bedroom sliding door, letting me know I need to climb out of bed and fill them all again. There's six of 'em on the feeder right now, and they're taking turns knocking each other off.

Another great photo, Ron, but what an odd looking hummer. What kind is it?

It's always something, isn't it, Buppies? At least the new grass is benefiting from all the rain.

Hope you can get along with the squirrels as well as you have with Booboo, Thomas!

A dozen Canada geese just flew by not fifty feet from the window at eye level, honking and calling loud enough to wake the dead. Talk about noisy neighbors!

Got word from the guy I've been working with at Everything Attachments that they'll make an eighty-four inch tooth bar for the big tractor, and it'll take three or four weeks. I was hoping it could ship with the grapple, but it went out yesterday. I just need to send them a drawing of the stove bolts that hold the bucket edge in place so they get the countersunk square holes right, and McMaster makes that easy on their website. Took delivery of the hydraulic couplers that the grapple will use day before yesterday. I decided to go with flat faced couplers, as the design spills a lot less oil than the old Pioneer style.

Updated the new MacBook Pro to the latest version of macOS yesterday, and so far, so good. The iPhone is getting an update installed right now, so fingers crossed that goes OK, too.

Got some seat time on the tractor yesterday moving dirt onto the bank between the garage and pump house. Well actually, most of that time was spent picking rocks out of the bank, and out of the fill dirt, and dumping them onto the closest rock pile. Still haven't been able to move the firetruck because the wind has been blowing so hard I'm afraid to unhook the tarp that covers it. And I'm planning to swap out the ratchet straps for bungee cords so I can get it off quicker in an emergency, and the bungee cords haven't been delivered yet. So after enough rock picking to get Mr. Back complaining, I put up a couple pieces of "C" channel as shelves for all the spray cans of solvent and lubricant I use in the garage so they wouldn't be taking up space on the workbench. There's almost nothing on the bench for the first time in years, and I'm trying to keep it that way as I move stuff back into the garage from storage. Brought in a foot high stack of shop manuals and instructions to weed through that was also sitting on the bench, and decided to take a page out of Bruce's book and have a nap instead.

Today's high is only supposed to be in the low 80s, so I'm gonna start the day by running another lead for the satellite TV into the bedroom. There are already two in here, but they're on the wrong walls. I get to go up in the attic and drill a hole into the top of the wall, then snake the cable down to where I can reach it through another mouse hole. Finding that wall's top plate'll be fun through 18" of blown in insulation...

Hope everyone enjoys a great weekend!

Morning....70 outside this AM in a heavy fog. Heading to 90's today. Probably a pool day. But that front porch needs to come down. Unfortunate from the inside I cannot see how the thing is supported against the house. And with the walls built on top of what was the deck, I need to take the floor boards out to figure out how the deck is supported underneath. Looks like some 4x4's are in my future.

Had some disturbing news yesterday. daughter in the land down under is under covid isolation. Her entire compound has been instructed to not go anywhere until testing and results come into play. Seems there was a confirmed case in the "village" and the health authorities are trying to track and contain. Hopefully she can manage through this as family support is 14 hours difference by phone/video only.

Speaking of deer, I spied one munching on a tree on its hind legs. Guess the leaves are sweeter the higher you go. After that it made it over to my koi-less pond and wanted to munch on the hostas. It had not yet spotted me, so I yelled out a few times every attempted munch. LOL. It finally decided the vocal hosta was a bit to much to deal with and sprinted off into the back pastures. I don't think it ever saw me and I was only about 40 feet away. Too funny.

Hope all have a good day today. Be safe. Hope all are on the mends.

Can she get adequate medical care? Hope it doesn't hit her hard, and she gets better soon. Prayers.

Almost forgot. Heard back from the solar salesman yesterday. Turns out, he's a partner in the company, and also acts as project manager. After our previous call, he talked to the owner and learned he'd been pressuring the electricians to work faster so they can move on to new jobs. That's pretty much the impression I had as well, and the salesman said he was going to put a stop to it. He also assured me that whatever needs replaced or fixed would be, and that the work would be completed in a timely manner. He he'd be with the electrical lead, and they'd be working together to make things right. Sounds good to me...
