good kindling wood

RonMar, A big 'ole pike of cedar shingles? Man are you lucky, that surely does make superb kindling. Obviouly we have no probelms becsue we are pruing olive trees and have access to acres of thin branches for kinlding. One idea is to save your old cooking oil and us it as lighter fluid. It doens't flame up at you and poured on small wood it will really help start a fire. Do you use a bellows when you are trying to start your fires? we have now converted to heating only with wood. heck we have so much of it, why not? we have a deal in our house, one cooks dinner one makes the fire. We really ue the bellows a lot to get the fire going.

Ron when we start a fire up hera it is in late September and then keep it going until late April.

I use wood scrapes, pine is good, also collect a few branches from time to time. There is always some wood project that I am working on so I make lots of sawdust and kindling. Always cute to use black walnut, hard maple or oak as kindling.

tried this yesterday....broke up a pallet into small scraps, threw a few pinecones and a handful of straw in and had a nice fire going in no time. All it cost me was some time.....I get the pallets for free from the local co-op.

Deerfan, good! Great to hear you found an easy way to start your fires. basically I hthink what it boils down to is all year long looking for opportunites to stockpile kindling, not jsut once the winter hits. If oyu keep your eyes peeled you'll find good kindling sources all year long.
