just my experience but I don't know how gravity works in MO but around here the few flat runs of gravel lanes are the only sections that require virtually no maintenance...

Then they obviously don't run downhill or you have no rainfall?? Either one will turn that flat road into a ditch.

Not here...it's like concrete we get plenty of rain...being flat it simply runs off the low side (the other side is a mountain)...being flat and level there is no place for it to accumulate...and erode anything...
...On the hills I pitch it to the low side (no crown) where I can and ditch and culvert where I can't....
