Can someone explain the difference between a "goose-neck (gn)" and a 5th wheel please? Reading the various posts, it appears that they are 2 different hitch systems. What the U.S. members refer to as bumper pull is all I am familiar with.

A fifth wheel is just what it says. A smaller version of a semi tractor connector. A gooseneck is a general term for a type of trailer but is generally regarded to mean a 2 5/16" ball in the bed of a truck that a socket on the trailer drops onto. The fifth wheel has a king pin that slides into the jaws and latches.

With a few exceptions.......

Large campers are usually the only 5th wheel stuff you see.

Most equipment trailers, you rarely see 5th wheel.....always GN.

Given a choice.....I prefer GN. When you unhook the trailer....you bed is free.
