So the almighty google created new look for gmail and gave us option to try it out. I gave it honest two month but it is not very user friendly and I was happy to switch back to the original.

Guess what, today they switched to the new look and there is no way back.:mad:

Sounds like you used a beta format...and Google decided they made it permanent.

It appears that Google is falling into the Microsoftism chasm. Corporations like government suffer from bloat and bureaucratism and their quality of service and mission suffer from this bloating effect. I still use MS and a lot of their products, but when this PC dies it will be my last one. I will make the painful move to something else. That is a bigger deal now than it would have been 10 years ago. My comfort zone for learning new things, particularly cyber related things has shrunk disproportionately with my advancing age!

So true. Maybe I'm just getting old & crusty, too. I'm afraid that in a few years I'll be that old at the town meeting guy who always stands up an shouts "I'm agin it!".

Prokop - I use Gmail and noticed the change - all I did was change the color scheme but I have not noticed much of a difference except maybe how you move or label things...what am I missing ..? What have you seen that I might not have yet that is a problem...or not user friendly...Thanks

I'm guessing gmail is a google product?? I didn't know that; never used gmail myself, but got relatives and friends who use it. They haven't said anything about a change.

Another thing is that I used google almost exclusively for searches for a few years, but they changed up their maps and now I use Bing much more than google.

Bird, Since you brought up Google maps...I have a question...Do you not get concerned that the areal view offered by Google maps along with the street view makes it awful easy for criminals and terrorists to case their targets....that troubles me...What do you think ?

You may very well be right, Bob, but I've just not been concerned about it.

I've been cursing google's gmail for a while because I could'nt find an UNDO button. When I make a mistake it can't be undone. So when they switched me to their amazing new look, I went to see if they finally included an UNDO button. Nope. So I started a sarcastic response to their questionaire I inadvertently hit the right mouse button and there was the UNDO button on the mouse's menu. Only good for one UNDO mind you. Still don't see why they wouldn't put an UNDO and REDO button.

Bird, if you see any Terrorist, give me and Jim a heads up so we can watch for'em, since I shut down my missile silo I doubt I'd interest them much though:D

I tried Gmail, didn't care for it so I went back to Yahoo, maybe because I was just "used" to Yahoo already though. My wife and my parents use GMAil and like it, but I probably get more emails than they do so....

Betas usually always come out for a "trial" run, easy way for them to spot "bugs" before a full launch.

Western,,, If you are laughing at my question about being concerned about criminals or terrorists using Google Maps ...areal view and street view...well then consider them sitting safely in Somalia or Iran, Pakistan etc. and using their computers to see all of our infrastructure...Water treatment facilities, bridges, electrical stations and who knows what else..does that not bother anyone just a little that Google puts that out there..?

Dennis, one of my daughters, son-in-law, and grandson, as well as some friends, have used gmail for a long time and like it, but at least for my daughter, it's probably the other way around. She probably get more, instead of fewer, e-mails than I do.

Bob, I think I can understand your concern, and as I said, you may be right. But if someone is really intent on doing you, me, or the country harm, there are plenty of other ways they can get the information besides google maps. But even assuming you're right, what could we do about it? I don't always succeed, but I try to avoid worrying about things that I have no way of doing anything about anyway.;)

Bird...Let me give you an example....On our farm we have a tenant house in the front of a property adjacent to the farm...I just had a new tenant call me and say that he noticed on Google earth that I had a lake at the back of my farm and could he fish in the lake...Now we have had Several tenants in that house over the years..the last was there for 16 yrs. and he never knew we had a lake...this tenant , thanks to Google now knows, I told him No...that I had a project with my grand daughter involving the lake and it was not possible ...but do you think he might be slipping back there and fishing...? I don't live there ..so I have no way of knowing..but I did not give Google permission to take areal views of my farm and put them out for all poachers and potential trespassers to see - that is my only point..as far as our critical infrastructure the government should be able to pass a law making it illegal for Google or anyone else to publish on the internet areal views of our military installations and vital infrastructure...Just me....and yes it bothers me. :)

Google tried to change me over but allowed me to revert. They had me fill out what I thought about the new format.

I cannot repeat what I said. :D

On my browser, Firefox, I could not read the dang page. It just looked all whited out.

For a while I had my own website and userid/password which cost $20-30 a month. I just might go back and spend the money if the new GMAIL is as bad as my first view.

So far they have not moved me to the new look.

Later,
Dan

I wouldn't be too concerned. When I brought up Google maps (or any map service that's free) the satellite picture I see is a few years old. When looking at my own property I see the truck in my driveway that I haven't owned in 3 years. So I'd say all those maps are a little outdated.

I check my address reguarly and the Google map version is less than a year old and one of the other sites has a version less than a month old. There are some that are still a number of years out of date. There was a site that had a set of maps and you could pick the date you wanted. I wish I could remember where found that cause it was cool seeing the progress of the property over the last 20 years.

I hadn't looked at it in quite awhile, so I don't know how old the picture is of my place, but I know it shows a tree that's been gone more than two and a half years.:)

I work for the Feds. My outfit is changing our email and servers over to Google mail. I don't like it.

Any sensitive work email will now be stored on a non govt system by an outside company that otherwise sells data to other customers and advertisors. Another Facebook. The reason given is so people can access their email by smart phones easier. I don't think it is a very smart move but what do I know?

Also, on Google Earth...there is also a scroll bar where you can scroll back to previous years and see the satellite picture.

If you have a smart phone and use Facebook depending on your preferences...you can be tracked on line.

I feel like you do, Brin.
