The better fuel mileage will be offset by repair bills down the road. Like anything new the technology is plagued by issues.
Bad injectors, faulty high pressure pumps, intake runners and ports that won't keep themselves clean (gasoline engines) mean more maintenance down the road.
All of the European cars with direct fuel injection have issues and are not cheap to repair.
I love this technology also but buyer beware. You must use fuel injection cleaner on regular basis to keep these injectors from plugging causing cold misfires and pesky check engine light. The nozzles are so very small it is hard to see with the naked eye.

I see these every week or two. PITA to clean, expensive chemicals and labor = money for the repair guy, end of story. The harder you drive these things the cleaner they stay.
