Agreed,
What does the Inspection "mean" After reading between the lines in the article...
They will inspect and and in some cases replace with 0W-40 oil... If not a full engine replacement.
So part of what GM is saying - engines that exhibit low oil pressure and are near end of factory warranty, We will dump the super thin 0W-20? and put in oil rated as 40 weight when the engine is hot, hopefully making it past the warranty date before the oil pressure on the scored main and rod bearings isn't enough to keep what's left of the bearings alive? ( Not against thicker oil in general) To many manufacturers are using oil so thin to beat EPA mileage ratings they are under protecting bearings with oil that pours like water.
I have to wonder,: If serious they would pull the engine out on every one, pull oil pan, rod and mains and cam, so the bearings can then be checked for damage and the entire oiling system for metal contamination and verify in spec bearing clearances. Don't see GM going to that level.
It could mean with the stereo playing mid level, tech can't hear rod knock over the stereo in the truck, so it passes inspection... dump in the 40 weight. Next.
I Hope at a minimum, every single engines oil filter is cut open and a Go No Go is done on the amount and size of the metal trapped in the filter. See Lots of bearing babbitt in the filter pleats, or a low oil pressure reading, should be an automatic engine replacement. jmo GM's MMV
