GM recalls 721K trucks with 6.2L engine

A real lame recall fix it is too.
Apparently if you have a certain ecm code they'll replace the engine. If not, it's a new oil cap, oil change with heavier oil and filter. Hopefully, on their part I presume, it'll tide you over 'till the warranty expires.
A question that was brought up on another site I visit is if they do replace the engine, it doesn't extend the warranty past the original mileage which is a given. So you still more than likely have the same engine as there's no way they'd have that many new design engines but it'll last until the warranty expires.
Me being cynical....yup but bet it's correct.

Agreed,

What does the Inspection "mean" After reading between the lines in the article...

They will inspect and and in some cases replace with 0W-40 oil... If not a full engine replacement.

So part of what GM is saying - engines that exhibit low oil pressure and are near end of factory warranty, We will dump the super thin 0W-20? and put in oil rated as 40 weight when the engine is hot, hopefully making it past the warranty date before the oil pressure on the scored main and rod bearings isn't enough to keep what's left of the bearings alive? ( Not against thicker oil in general) To many manufacturers are using oil so thin to beat EPA mileage ratings they are under protecting bearings with oil that pours like water.

I have to wonder,: If serious they would pull the engine out on every one, pull oil pan, rod and mains and cam, so the bearings can then be checked for damage and the entire oiling system for metal contamination and verify in spec bearing clearances. Don't see GM going to that level.

It could mean with the stereo playing mid level, tech can't hear rod knock over the stereo in the truck, so it passes inspection... dump in the 40 weight. Next.

I Hope at a minimum, every single engines oil filter is cut open and a Go No Go is done on the amount and size of the metal trapped in the filter. See Lots of bearing babbitt in the filter pleats, or a low oil pressure reading, should be an automatic engine replacement. jmo GM's MMV

Yup for sure. All GM cares about with the heavier oil is getting it 1 mile or 1 day over the warranty. Car manufacturers wonder why there is no loyalty to their brand, this is a prime example.

I have a friend with ‘21 6.2L. Truck will lay a set of dark black rubber on the road for 100’ with ease.
Me, I’ll putter along with a Cummins.
Never understood running gas trucks when diesel trucks will do so much more for so much longer (‘cept the price). Still believe in buy once, cry once.

I remember when GM engines and drivetrains were sought after….

Yup, when you owned a GM you had something worth owning. Now as Paystar stated, it's the same with everything and not just vehicles. All seem to be made to last slightly past the warranty.

You're right, you get the same version of engine as a replacement, BUT there's nothing new to do anyway. It's not an engine design flaw causing these issues, it's manufacturing defects, which are now solved. So if you get a new engine swapped in, you're good.

It's a 'new' engine yes but an improved version?
If they currently have thousands of improved engines around as available warranty replacements, for how long have they known there's been a problem and had time to manufacture them? I'll go with the theory that it's the old engine design which will outlast the warranty which is GM's main concern.

My SIL just purchased a 2025 GMC AT4 with the 6.2 V8(I told him about the problems) because his 2020 5.3 failed!
Supposed to be fixed with the 2025,I hope so.
I used to trade every two years, not any more.
