I know I'm speaking a different vehicle but my 94 Olds 88 lasted until 2013 before brake lines rusted out ,that is close to 20 years ,I know someone will say my salt is less corrosive
My '93 Volvo 940 Wagon (now owned by my brother) is at almost 250k miles, the first 177k miles were spent in Upstate NY, the rest were spent out west. Still on the original brake lines (the fuel return line had to be replaced though) and it has less rust than my wife's '02 Caravan with under 120k miles on it.

I just saw a 2007+ Chevy with rust over the fenders. Not a good sign.

I can pretty much guarantee it was wrecked an not fixed correctly. I have NEVER seen anything like that around here and there are that vintage GM trucks everywhere.

Besides, who sticks all that $2.00 junk all over their truck in the first place.

My plumber has a 05 with rust in both cab corners, around all 4 wheel wells, door bottoms, tail gate, and rear bumper. It has 180,000 miles on it and to the trucks defense it's only had some of the brake lines replaced and the transfer case. All in all its been good to him. He's doing work for me right now and he said he's waiting till it dies before he parts with 50K.

It greatly depends on location and the type of chemicals used on the roads in the winter. Also, I have seen vehicles parked in a garage that has a fresh concrete floor to be terribly rusted within 6mo. So, when you see a truck, RTV, or Toolcat totally rotted out in the back, do you blame the maker or do you blame the salter mounted in the back? They ALL rot.

Now it's your plumber that has a bad GM..Everyone you ever came into contact with has lousy GM products?...That's some pretty incredible bad luck..Good grief.

I personally have never had rust on a GM product. I have always washed the undersides off after driving on a salted surface. The last couple of years have been bad for heavy salt on highways.

i know i owned 2 gm products and never will again. I like their v8 engines but the rest of the vehicle seems to not be as durable to say the least...

I never said it was bad. Go back and re read my post. It's been a great truck for him. It's earned it's money the hard way. It's a base model 2500 gas 4x4, regular cab long bed that never leaves unless loaded.

I just meet the guy 3 days ago. Part of his bid to put in a bathroom in my hanger was my grunt work. We have had to cut a 70' trench 16" wide and 36" deep. Out sourced that to a wet saw company. It has been all hand dug. No macinery other then my Polaris Ranger allowed inside per the Airport Authority. We hauled everything out in it a mile away on the airport to a dump site. Gives us a lot of time to BS. Monday we get inspections, back fill with sand, compact, and have a Crew pour 8" of concrete over it.

Honestly, he does not seem too concerned with the rust. It would drive me nuts.

Maybe it was in a flood or driven in salt a lot.

My '91 Chevy 4x4 never had a line replaced in the 11 years I owned it. My '97 never had a line replaced in the 10 years I owned it..Both had around 200k on them when I traded them.

My '04 had no line issues when I traded it in late 2010.

I am in the heart of salt country, PennDot dumps it everywhere in the winter. I've seen a few, and I mean a few, occrurrances of line rot below the drivers door on some early '00's GM trucks but the vast majority of people I know have not had any issues at all. Could have been a supplier issue for certain runs, who knows but it wasn't even close to every truck.

My neighbor has an 04 Silverado. I replaced lines on it when it was 4 years old. His truck might have 90K miles on it now. I have replaced lines on several of the 99-06 trucks. I have also replaced a lot of lines on Buicks.

I think VDOT is trying to catch with PennDOT. VDOT went way overboard on salt this year.

Only thing I have replaced brake lines on is one Jeep and 3 or 4 GM vehicles. Actually all the GM's were either Pontiac or Olds.

I make a good many brake lines. I do some fuel lines and once in a while trans cooler lines. I have made every single brake lines on several vehicles. Brake lines on vehicles with 4 wheel ABS can be a pain.

GM is definitely not the only one who had brake pipe corrosion issues on their trucks NHTSA had an investigation open in the last couple years looking at all big 3 trucks. I will say that GM's new pipes have a dramatically improved coating in the last few years

Previous to my new GM truck, I had 2 Ford trucks that I had also bought new. Previous to our new GM car, we had 2 Chrysler cars, 1 new and 1 nearly new. We are VERY happy with the GM products we have now.
