i thought it was the pinto that had the rear end combustion chamber?

all i know is that my wife is an er nurse and has seen way to may kids left parentless because their mom and dad were in a jap car and got in a wreck head on and the ENGINE came into the passenger compartment and killed one or both of them
but hey that is just my experience im sure everyone has their own life stories that shape who they are and what they buy and where they live

you might be a redneck if "you no longer drink wine ever since the screw cap got caught up your nose."

talk about a fallacy.

remember when NBC did their expose' on that issue? nbc HAD TO PUT AN EXPLODING CHARGE the GM truck to get the fire to start.

Objectivity in the Media creates Parrots who repeat what they are told.

I hope your not refering to the whole Dateline fiasco where they showed that on TV. GM now has that truck on display. Dateline rigged it with a pile of model rocket engines to make it go up like that. Don't believe the media.

Show us the more accurate up to date data that you have???

Well, keep smiling and patting yourself on the back that Toyota full size trucks have more American content than full size GM or Ford trucks. Anytime you want to line-em up, either pulling, racing, dynoing, carrying weight or the amount of American content, I think you'll always be able to find an American built that'll kick any Japanese full size trucks azz from Tokyo to Detroit.

And what has changed so much since '04? Toyota's plant in San Antonio isn't done. Even if it was, all they're doing is importing Japanese engines, transmissions, rears, brakes, electrical sytems, etc. and assembling them in the USA. Does that make you feel really " 'Murrican made?"

In a quick net search I found these articles about content.

maybe they should just label it right:
made in america with parts from who knows where
made by mexico by an american company
made in japan by an american company
made and sold in america by a jap company using jap parts and american labor

The Pinto was another poster child for Detroit. The Pinto was parodied in comedy movies. Just ALMOST hitting the rear of a Pinto in a movie caused panic and or an explosion.

GMC found it cheaper to stonewall and fight to reduce compensation payments related to the INFAMOUS fuel tanks outside the frame rails design than to change the design so they put their $ on lawyers not a redesign. Corporate greed immolated several unfortunates.

Congratulations on having your own ER nurse. Now that could come in real handy every so often.

Get over it. If they say something unpopular about your favorite car or truck you need to reexamine your position. Consumers Reports has been sued numbers of times for reporting their automotive test results fairly and accurately. THEY HAVE NEVER LOST ONE OF THESE CASES!!! Auto makers with their hoards of skilled lawyers sue them but none have ever won. The Auto giants typically drop the suite when they see their case is unwinable.

They use credible engineering and careful analysis in their tests. They may not test something the way you might want it tested but the tests they do perform are fully defensible, backed by sound engineering principles and physics coupled with good statistical analysis. Consumers Reports (Consumer's Union) has been a positive force in dragging the automakers (and other industries) toward better and safer products. They sell nothing but their reliable information and accept no advertisements or freebies. They buy all the stuff they test just like you and I, at retail without revealing any affiliation with CU or Consumers Reports.

Like I said, anytime you want to line up a Toyota full size pickup against a GM or Ford full size and go over domestic content, I'll pay your gas and hotel bill to come up here to my place an we'll line em up to see who's got more.

Then we'll get the chains out and I'll drag your japanese made pickup kickin & screaming backwards and give you gas money for home (they don't make a diesel pickup, so will unleaded be OK?) ;)

BTW: How are Toyota Tundra sales? Have they cracked 10% of the full size market yet? Maybe they will based on the raging success of the T-100 LOL.

If people are sold the same bill of goods over & over, they begin believing it. Like cigarrettes were good for your lungs back in the 50's, or like Al Gore would make a great president. LOL

If I want to buy a full size diesel 4x4 pickup, the last publication I would consult would be Consumer Reports. Maybe a economy car, but not a real work truck. Maybe CR would do the vaunted "10K uphill towing test" to see which truck makes it to the top of the hill the fastest!!! OOooooohhhhh, there's a real important test!!!!
Too bad they don't know that a real truck buyer wants to know how many times it'll make it up the hill without breaking down, not just who's the fastest.

I've been running heavy-built pickups, dumps, diesels & 4x4's most of my life in real world conditions. As of now, the Japanese companies have yet to offer a pickup that would cut it in the construction world, but I'm sure CR would rate them #1.

umm last time i checked it was 2007 here in my part of oklahoma
my first truck was a 82 gmc longbed head on colision on a one way bridge bent my fender and bumper but totaled the nissan pickup i hit to bad it was his fault since i was on the bridge first
2nd truck was an 84 with 2 tanks it was rolled in an ice storm,
no boom boom in either trucks.
my only point to all this is 20 year old stuff is obviously not as safe as the new stuff so the point is mute to me. how many of us rode around in trucks with gas tanks behind the drivers seat? how safe was that?

Safety advocates and plaintiffs' attorneys claim that 1973 to 1987 G.M. fullsize pickup trucks are "rolling firebombs" because their gas tanks are mounted between the frame and the exterior panels. The Nader-founded Center for Auto Safety wants the feds to force G.M. to recall these trucks, which could cost the company some $500 million.
In a Wall Street Journal column, litigation analyst Walter Olson compared the fatal-crash records of full-size G.M. pickups with those of other vehicles. He found that G.M. trucks were about 10-percent safer than the average passenger car, 50 percent safer than compact pickups, and almost identical in safety to their closest competitors, full- size Ford pickups.

Reason Magazine - Crash Dummies

that is where i got the above statements after a google search

You might be a redneck if,
you’ve ever had to siphon gas from your lawn mower to put into your truck

It's OK, you can insult me if it makes you feel better, I expect nothing less from a liberal. ;)

Rather than bring myself down to that level, I'll stick to the premise of our discussion, which is your assumption that Toyota trucks have more American content than GM or Ford trucks. Well, I believe I presented a strong case that your assumption was incorrect. My GMC truck was 86% domestic in content, my Ford Superduty is 90%. If you can show me your full size Toyota is more, I'll admit I was wrong.

I believe that GM truck was designed to acceptable standards of its day.

anybody remember the good old days when the gas tank was behind the drivers seat of anything called a pickup truck??

how about all those gas and diesel powered trucks that roam the byways, which have exposed fuel tanks on the outisde of the truck.

my F600 had a 50 gallon gasoline tank that doubled as a step to get into the old girl.

funny how people gotta bring up something designed more than 30 years ago as a way of justifying their attitude toward a corporation.

No, I don't want to insult you or anyone else on this forum or anywhere else. Where did you get the idea I was a liberal? I'm not-I have never voted anything but conservative in my life. I love Pat Buchanan...not too fusy about the current Repulicans though...except McCain. Not sure what politics has to do with all this anyway.

I know that personal attacks are not allowed and I am not trying to make this a personal attack but to be honest you really dont know what the heck you are talking about. I am curious about the 30 dollar an hour job inspecting lug nuts exactly which company and what written proof do you have of that. While on the subject of salary what does a MRI engineer make per year. I am a union official. At the moment I am on a lunch break from a Seminar on Arbitrations. Attendees are Management and labor attorneys, Union officials, and Members of the National Academy of Arbitrations. If you want to talk about people squeezing this country lets talk about the very upper levels of management. What about CEO's that are making tens of millions of dollars in bonuses while the company they are directing is millions of dollars in the hole for that year. Or what about companies like american airlines where the unions took very large pay cuts to help the company out and then found out that all the upper managers had been promised a bonus equal to a years salary if they stayed on. What unions have done in this country is to help working people get a living wage. Look at the industries that do not have unions. How many of them are paying a substandard wage and no benefits. If you want a prime example of how a union and employer can work together look at Southwestern Airlines. The are the most highly profitable airline in the US today. They are also the most heavily unionized. Their Vice President over Labor Management spoke at a dinner here last night. He said that early on their goal was to pay their employees a fair wage and work with the union. It has been a very successful policy. The problems the big three have had are more in line with not adapting to different economics conditions in their choice of product lines.

As far as your comments about globalization you might look at who owns what companies in the auto industry worldwide.
gemini5362....you said your a union official. Are you a stewart? What is your local number? Just happy to see another union member onboard in TBN world. I'm a union member myself, local 2370 UAW. By the way...I just machined a part for the allison transmission the other night at work. Also, I work for Mahle -> Home, Malhe just purchased the company that I did work for which was the Dana Corporation's engine hard parts business. Press release Dana March 9, 2007

Letsroll- . Yes I am a steward among other things. I am the vice president of our local. I am the state craft director for the maintenance craft. I also am an advocate for the union I am one of the people that represent the union in arbitrations for maintenance.

That's good, because insulting other members is against site rules. Where did you get the idea that I never read anything? All I was trying to do is correct a statement that you made that was incorrect and you seemed to get very defensive about it. I thought I presented my facts quite well, even naming a source with facts & figures.
I have noticed that a lot of Nissan & Toyota owners get very defensive that way. Maybe on the inside they feel guilty???? Just my opinion, I'm entitled to it.
