anyone have some guidence on how the glow plugs work? I'm used to a light that goes out when they are ready. Is it just something that you have to time yourself?

woodsleeboy,

I don't know why Deere doesn't detail this in their owner's manuals, but all you have to do is: put the tractor in gear or engage the PTO, turn the key all the way to the start position, you will hear a click and the idiot lights will dim. Just hold that for 2-20 seconds depending on the temp, put the tractor in neutral or disengage the PTO, and start er' up. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

This might be a silly question but would it do the same thing if you just turned the key to on (glow light comes on) and wait 2-20 seconds then start. Why do you have to shift to gear or engage PTO?

Sorry, but I'm also used to the glow light that shuts off when they are warm enough.

Thanks...

Nope. These tractors don't have a glow plug, but a pre-heater. You need to engage it the way I described.

We get this all the time from new owners.

I suspect the 2305 is like my 4010. The glow plug position on the ignition switch is between the "on" and "start" position. However, without a test light connected to one glow plug with the other end to ground, it's very difficult to tell when you're at that "glow plug on" spot. So, the easiest way is to put the shift lever in gear and to turn the key all the way to "start" and hold for 2-5 seconds (doubt you need any longer than 5 seconds; only 2 in hot weather). Put the shift lever into "N" while still holding the key, and the engine should start instantly. This works also with the PTO button on and then off.

Get yourself a test light and check it out.

In really cold weather, be sure and move the throttle lever open about 1/3 way. Otherwise, it'll likely start and die; start and die.

JD,
On my 2305 I just jump on and turn the key wait a moment and I hear a click and my idiot lights get just a bit brighter, no engaging anything!

Yes. That's how it works, but if you want the plugs to glow longer than the standard time (if it's really cold, say) then you can use this technique to force them to stay on for a while.

Really Ralph, I've never had to start my 2210 at anything other than idle? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I looked at the manual on the web, and it does have glow plugs. But I found on my 4110, its hard to hear the click when they go off. But like has been said, if you watch the dash lights they are dim, then in 2 or 3 seconds they get bright, that is when the glow plugs have turned off as they have heated. I know mine doesn't seem to start as quick as I would like, as a tractor with a lot more hours did. So if its cold use the in gear or PTO on for a very few seconds, and it will start faster, as they will have been on longer. I think I have figured it out. These are new and not broke in, so they don't have the compression to heat up from the pressure in there. As the rings get seated it will have more compression and will start easier. Then the few seconds of glow plug heat will be enough to start it good, unless its really cold, then of course you will probably need to use the longer way.
