Deer Drive Shooter Hits Fellow Hunter
Story date: 12/27/2006 By Mike Colbert A Waldoboro man taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound netted summonses for six men, including the victim, 31 year old Troy Glidden. They were all issued summonses for illegal deer driving.

On Nov. 24, the six men, all from Gross Neck in Waldoboro, made their way to Louds Island for a day of hunting and deer driving.

In a deer drive, hunters spread out in a line and move through the woods, trying to flush out deer. The intent of the drive is to “push a deer out,” said Game Warden Joe Lefebvre, “so it will give the next guy in line a shot.”

Shannon Harvey, 33, reported seeing a deer flash through the woods during the drive.

He fired at the flash of motion. Once. Twice.

When Glidden was hit, he went down. He yelled at Harvey to stop shooting.

Harvey later told wardens that he was unsure if he had seen a buck or a doe.

The group of men took Glidden to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta, where game wardens interviewed them.

“He’s lucky to be alive,” said Lefebvre. The 00-buckshot punched through the left side of Glidden’s face. Entering at the moustache, it exited the neck on the other side of his head. “If it had been an inch to the left, it would have lodged in his spine and killed or paralyzed him.”

Deer driving is an illegal activity, due to the unusual dangers it presents.

Theoretically, a line of men spread out with 30 to 40 yards between them, would be able to maintain visual contact with the person on each side of them. Glidden was reportedly the next man to Harvey’s left.

The longer the line, the more compounded the problem. “If one guy on the end of the line gets too far ahead,” said Lefebvre, “the fourth or fifth or sixth one over has no idea where he is.”

In addition to the summonses for Harvey and Glidden for deer driving, Lefebvre said four others received summonses. They included Shannon’s brother, Joshua Harvey, 20, his father Neil Harvey, 59, and two juvenile males. Glidden is Shannon’s cousin.

The District Attorney’s office is currently reviewing the case to see if Harvey should also be charged with reckless conduct with a firearm.

Not only illegal, deer driving is extremely dangerous said Lefebvre. “It’s crazy. It’s Russian roulette.”

Interesting article.

In most states it's perfectly legal to do deer drives. It's very, very common in Europe to hunt this way. Drives for other animals is also the only effective method to hunt them without dogs. A few examples are game birds and wild hogs.

Since they were deer hunting with shotguns, it tells me thats an area of the country that rifles are illegal to hunt with. In those places, it's too congested with homes and people to use a rifle because the bullet can travel for miles. Shotgun slugs and pellets are only effective at short ranges.

I found the article to be more about a guy getting exited and shooting at movement without knowing what it is. Buck fever, stupidity or just a lack of experience caused the accident. Not the deer drive, and not deer hunting.

Any given year there will be a couple dozen injuries from somebody being shot by accident, with a few dying. What's interesting to me is more people die playing football, basketball and other team sports than they do hunting.

Not only is driving deer legal in w.va.,,you can use your choice of center fire rifle,,[30-06 semi,,ak 47,,,7mm mag,,
We do have hills to stop the bullits,,but that only works if you are shooting at a hill.
Yes,very dangerous,,,,,I had a bullit buzz by my head one time,,couldn't have missed me more than a foot or so.
You can drive safely,,you just gotta plan it,,everybody has to know where every body is,and where they can shoot, and where they can't,,etc,,,but even than,,dangerous. thingy

I don't have a problem with "drives", it's just like pushing corn stubble for pheasant. We'd walk along spaced about 20 yards apart and put a few guys to act as blockers at the end of the field. The blockers keep the pheasant from running out the end of the field.

You certainly needed to be aware of the location of the other partners (just ask Dick Cheney) and wearing hunter orange was also imperative.

However, if that form of hunting i illegal in Maine, then I hope they get what's coming to them.

Year or so ago, down in Thomasville N.C area, a young boy was out with his grandfather. Boy had another hunter in his crosshairs with his rifle. Grandfather told the boy to shoot. Think about that. A guy/boy has you in his crosshairs (scope on a rifle), your wearing orange, and the guy/boy shoots you anyway. Went to court, the grandfather and boy got off scott free.

I always like the guys when I was set up in a long range shooting lane (east coast here) walk buy and they only had thier scope on thier rifle. When you want to check something out "aways" away, bring a spotting scope with you, don't use your scope. Use your scope, and your pointing your gun at what your looking at (I'm sure guys always keep thier finger off the trigger).

Sounds almost like the same event that happen here in NH this deer season...
deer drive, deer jumps up between two hunters, hunter shot his buddy, buddy okay,no charges....I call that careless and reckless w/firearm,and feel some sort of charges should be file...weren't we taught never point a gun at something if we don't attend to kill itn etc. etc.

Well, and good for me,you don't gotta proof your sanity before hunting,[or I wouldn't have near as much fun],,,BUT,,,,once you prove that you are an idiot/had no bussness in the first place with a gun in your hand,, etc,,,than the full force of the jail oughta come down on you,,,I mean there are accidents,,,and than accidents,,,,shouldn't be any different if you shoot at,wound, kill somebody in the woods hunting than if you did it in the hood,,,and being an idiot shouldn't be an excuse,,,,thingy

What gets me is when a non hunter gets shot during hunting season its their fault for walking outside without orange on...BULL !!
One of my co workers told me he was sitting out, when he heard a noise coming through the bushs,he sees something ,not sure what picks up his rifle, points it ,takes off the safety ,then a voice says please dont shoot me.It was the landowner carrying out tree bows to make wreaths.Guess that will be posted next yea:mad: When he told this story at work there were 3 others who admit pointing there guns at people.unfreakinbelievable!!!
My dad taught us alot different ,these guys shouldnt be allowed to hunt in my opinion.

I think they call that Buck Fever when a guy plasters his buddy because he say a deer. There is nothing wrong with a deer drive as long as you can trust the other people that you are hunting with. I guess that is why I hunt alone. That way I am only responsible for my own actions.

Alan,,couldn't agree more with your thoughts,,BUT,listen to this,,,,I ain't really a turkey hunter,,but do like to morrel mushroom hunt in the spring. We got 31 acres but,,no mushrooms,,,before we bought this place,I hunted on public land,,,just for a couple of years,my first experience with hunting on public land,[lotta stories there],anyways,,I found a patch of morrels,,,,so one spring,[in turkey season] went up,with my shotgun just in case,,to pick me some mushrooms,,,went back about where I had found them several times before,,,and heard ,,,cluck,,cluck,,cluck,,,purrrrr,,,rustle in leaves,,movement, not more than 100 yards,,,,cluck,,cluck, purrr,,etc,,,,well,I have seen flocks of turkeys in that same area,,and it was turkey season[although I wasn't really hunting],had no camo,,just carhardt jacket, etc,,,,well, this keeps up,,it gets closer,,,I move to side of a tree and raise gun up,,it keeps clucking and leaves rustleing and its,,,,,within 50 yards,,before I see an idiot,,fully camoed,,with head net and every thing,,clucking with a mouth call,,and walking ever so slow,,stalking,,,,I'm basicly standing in the open,,I lower my shotgun and wave,,,he don't see me,,he gets closer, clucking and cooing,,,he gets within 30 yards,,he still don't see me,,,,I move and wave,,cause I want this idiot to see me,,finnaly he does,,so you see,,its the responsibilty of non hunters as well as hunters to act right,,,,,my wive and little girl wear blaze orange jackets a week before and a week after season just to walk in their yard,,I won't let them in the woods except for sunday during gun season,,,,,,thingy
