I think this is the first TBN trailering thread that didn't involve needing a CDL

I lived in Texas for over two years and saw folks tow some crazy, heavy stuff with 1/2 ton trucks. The one that took the cake was a Ford F-150 pulling a 5th wheel camper AND A bass boat behind the camper going south down 35W. I know. No pic and it didn't happen. Wish I had a camera phone back then instead of the stupid Nextel. I was in shock. Is that even legal:confused:.

No, in Texas you can not tow two trailers, some states you can, but not in Texas.

Texas does allow you to pull 2 trailers if you are a commercial vehicle. The Texas DPS Drivers Handbook states the following in Section 15 Special Requirements for Commercial Motor Vehicles, on page 15-28:

5. Vehicle Combinations. No passenger vehicle or other motor vehicle with
an unloaded weight of less than 2,500 pounds may be coupled with more
than one other vehicle or towing device. If the unloaded weight is 2,500
pounds or more, then no more than three vehicles or towing devices may be
operated in a combination.

vehicle - means every device, in, upon, or by which any person or property
is or may be transported or drawn upon a highway, excepting devices used
exclusively upon stationary rails or tracks.

I was on my way to work one morning early. I was on Indiana 67, a 4 lane 60 mph road. As I rounded a bend I saw what looked to be a semi with trailer tailgating a older Dually Ford. They were doing about 55mph. As I passed I soon realized the Dually was pulling him with a short 15' chain.

I have pulled fully loaded semis out of snow banks, mud, ect with my diesels but that was at 3mph in 4 low, not 55mph on the highway.

I have had to do this many times at work with our 2000 K2500 service truck when one of our IH 7400 DOT plows break down on Ohio Rt 2. Normaly in heavy lake effect snow fall. However, I never exceed 30 or so MPH and always have 2 escort vehicles running full strobes. The 2500 has a 454 vortec, 4:10's, and a 4L80. It is also equiped with a fully loaded up utility body. Truck weighs around 9600. Add another 60,000 lbs of IH tandem dump truck full of salt behind it, and I could use another 2 454's under the hood when we have to do this. Amazingly, we just swapped the original trans, at 70k after it lost 1st gear. never thought it would have survived 11 years of that abuse. It just goes to show how far good maintenance and synthetic fluids will get you.

Tires on that trailer are to small for a 7K axle, knew someone might say this, but it is a good point to bring up.

Also should know that some trailer mfctrs will rate a trailer at 7K assuming 15% of the load is borne by the towing vehicle. In that case 2 3042lb rated tires would be sufficient.

Saw this while on a towing tip last Sunday in my Titan. I was cruising along I69 between Detroit and Indy doing about 75mph pulling 8,000# when I came around the bend and seen this rig wagging all over the place. He was only doing about 60mph and the tail was wagging the dog for sure. Truck was a short bed and as you can see he has a 5,000# SUV on a single axle trailer secured by 4 1" 1,000# ratchet straps from WalMart.:D

I slowed to take the picture then got the He11 out of there before I became a statistic with them. I guess it may be legal since he had Handicap Plates though.:D:confused2:

Chris

There are some cops who wouldn't care about any of that .......unless he had farm tags on that trailer..........then he'd be in big trouble :D
